A witch is a person with the power to effect change by magical means ("witchcraft").
Characteristics
Anyone is capable of becoming a witch, exactly how is not consistant. How individual witches receive their power varies. In Malleus Maleficarum, and possibly It's the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester and Swap Meat, demons fuel said witches' magical ability, according to Sam this is the main source. Powers and abilities
- Reality Warping - Altering reality through magic.
- Elemental Control - The act of controlling and manipulating the elements of air, earth, fire, water, and weather.

- Spell Casting - The act of changing and/or controlling events through the use of charms, hexes, rituals, etc. Powerful witches like Don Stark can easily cripple a Leviathan. It's unknown if they can kill a Leviathan, but it seems likely they could permanently neutralize one.
- Telekinesis: The act of controlling and manipulating the movements of objects and persons by mental influence.
- Potion Brewing - The act of brewing and concocting paranormal elixirs that contain supernatural properties.
- Longevity - Some witches have been know to live much longer then typical humans, but are not immortal.

- Books of Shadows/Grimoire - A magical book documented with ancient wisdom/knowledge, rituals, and spells.
- Candles - Materials used to amplify a witch's spells.

- Herbs and Roots - Materials used as ingredients for brewing magical potions.
- Athame - A blessed, double-edged blade used to draw blood for spells/rituals

- While most witches featured in Supernatural are antagonists, they are not portrayed as inherently evil, as the covens in Malleus Maleficarum and Swap Meat are not malicious (with the exception of Amanda Burns) and "Repo Man"'s Nora Havelock is an ally of Dean and Sam Winchester who works with Jeffrey against her will in order to save her son's life. One can assume that the Winchesters hunt evil beings, they would have no reason to hunt a benevolent witch and thus would rarely encounter one.
- Out of all the 'creatures' that Sam and Dean have faced, the Winchesters have the poorest record against Witches; none of them have been defeated by Sam and Dean specifically, more often than not they were killed by a demon they were associated with (who ironically are easier to dispose of).
