Where does Death fit in?

So both Amara and God have made it clear that in the beginning it was just them 2. Yet Death once claimed to be as old, maybe older than God. Huh? Amara didnt even know who he was.Moreover,Death was pretty clear that the darkness came before God and everything else(presumably Death himself)yet she doesnt seem to be able to exist independently of God? What? Is Death just full of crap all around?
