DO NOT CHANGE!

Dean hits the road with Jack who needs to complete a final ritual in the quest to beat Chuck (guest star Rob Benedict). A difference of opinion leaves Sam and Castiel behind looking for answers to questions of their own.

Plot[]

Reykjavik, Iceland

Amara is soaking in an outdoor hot tub and reading "Norwegian Wood" by Haruki Murakami. A spa attendant asks if she wants more wine, and she declines. Once the attendant leaves, Amara notices a rain of meteors overhead. She gets out as more meteors come down, and mutters to herself "Welcome home, brother."

At the bunker, Sam gets a call from Castiel. The angel says that he found nothing at the Basilica of Guadeloupe, despite rumor that there was a spell that could wound God. Sam tells Castiel to get home and hangs up, and Dean comes in but Sam says nothing to him. Dean insists that the only way is for Jack to sacrifice himself to kill Chuck and Amara. Sam doesn't believe it, and Dean insists that they have to get it done.

The Winchesters hear something in the kitchen, and go there to find Amara there. She tells them and Jack that Chuck has returned, and asks how they plan to cage God. Dean says that they have Jack, and Jack doesn't tell her that he'll be sacrificing himself. He does say that they need a final ritual to power himself up.

After Sam and Jack leave, Dean asks if they can count on Amara to help. She says that like she told him, they'll always help each other.

In the main room, Jack wonders if Sam is angry with him. Sam says that Jack sacrificing himself takes a lot of courage, but he still thinks that it's wrong. Dean comes in and says that they need to go to Santa Fe. Once Jack leaves, Sam tells him that he's not going with them. He asks Dean what he has to complete the final ritual, and says that they none of it feels right. Dean tells his brother that it doesn't matter how they feel, and Jack isn't family. Sam is shocked at Dean's declaration, and Dean tells Sam that Jack isn't like Sam or Castiel. Jack comes in and apparently overhears them, and Dean tells him that they're going. Dean and Jack drive to Santa Fe in silence.

Castiel returns to the bunker and asks Sam if he stayed behind to find another way. He sits down with Sam to find another way to defeat Chuck.

Amara sits in the forest, and Chuck appears. She asks what he's going to do after he destroys the world. Chuck says that he has an idea but he'll need her help to reboot everything without her. Amara refuses, and Chuck figures the Winchesters have "gotten" to her. He tells Amara that he didn't "write" her relationship with Dean, and figures Amara doesn't care about the world.

Amara invites Chuck to walk with him, and he does so. She suggests that he revels in the wonderful thing he's created, and Chuck says that it's about everywhere he looks, he's reminded of his failures. Amara tells him that none of it was a failure, but Chuck says that humans are lame, disappoint, and ruin everything they touch. She asks about his first children, and teleports them to Heaven.

In Heaven, Amara shows Chuck his "fans": the Angels that want his signature and adore him. Impatient, Chuck teleports them away and tells Amara that he wasn't inspired to do anything with them. Amara says that she wanted Chuck to feel their perfect angelic devotion. Chuck is not impressed, and says that he's made up his mind.

Amara teleports God to the Bunker, trapping him

Amara teleports God to the Bunker, trapping him

Amara says that they should try balance: creation and destruction, united on behalf of the world. She realizes that Chuck can't, and he only cares about his pleasure and his story. Amara tells Chuck that make him the villain, and teleports him to the bunker. Chuck discovers that he can't teleport himself away, and Amara says that she gave him an out but he wouldn't take it. Amara explains that the Winchesters have found a way to bind him, and Chuck angrily tells her that she can't hold him there forever. She says that she can hold him there long enough.

As Dean drives, Jack tells him that he doesn't have to worry about anything or need to be sorry. He admits that he's not like Sam and Castiel, and he understands.

The next day, Dean stops at a souvenir store to meet the person Billie said for him to meet with. A man greets Jack by name, although Jack doesn't recognize him. The man introduces himself as Adam: God's first creation. Meanwhile, Adam's woman Serafina admires Jack's aura. Jack realizes that Serafina is an angel, and she kisses Adam.

Adam leads Jack off for a "little private pop quiz". Jack assures Dean that he's okay and goes with Adam. Adam tells Jack that God kicked him and Eve out of the Garden, then moved onto his sons. Serafina tells Adam that Jack will pass the test, and she saw it in a dream.

Adam tells Jack that it's taken him 300,000 years to figure out how to kill Chuck, and Serafina kept him alive until Jack came along. They needed Jack-if he passes the test. Adam points out a display case full of stones, and Adam tells Jack that he has to pick out the one that has been touched by God. Jack starts examining them.

Serafina tells Dean that it was meant to be, that Dean would bring Jack there.

Jack finally picks out a stone, then says that all of them are divine because of their existence because God is in everything. Satisfied, Adam agrees and says that God should be in everything. The two of them go back to the main room and Jack says that he did it. Dean wonders what's next, and Serafina stabs Adam with a knife. She then pulls a rib out of Adam's chest and heals his injury. Adam tells Dean that the rib contains enough divine power to create life, and in this case, enough power to destroy God. Serafina says that everything that happened to Jack has prepared him for what comes next, and the rib will turn Jack into a black hole for divine energy. However, once it starts, it can't be stopped. Adam puts the rib in a baggie and gives it to Jack, asking if he understands, and Jack tells Adam that he understands.

Dean and Jack drive back to the bunker, and Dean finally pulls over and tells Jack that what he said to Sam wasn't something Jack needed to hear with the weight Jack is carrying for the world. He explains that when he heard about Chuck, it was like he wasn't really alive. Now Sam and Dean have a chance to live their lives without all the "crap", and that's because of Jack. Dean thanks Jack, and a surprised Jack says "you're welcome."

Dean gets a text and Jack realizes that it's time, and Dean confirms that it is. Jack takes the out the rib and concentrates, absorbing it into himself beginning the catalyst. His eyes glow briefly as the "detonation" starts.

At the bunker, Sam tosses aside the lore in frustration. Castiel picks up the book and puts it back in front of Sam, and says that he also feels the hopelessness. Sam tells the angel that it doesn't feel right, and he doesn't know what he believes. He wishes he could talk to Billie, and Castiel tells him that he won't let Sam sacrifice himself to summon Billie.

Sam uses the ''Key to Death''

Sam uses the ''Key to Death''

Sam and Castiel remember that Sergei came to the bunker looking for the "Key to Death". They figure they can use it to access Death's Library, and find the Key among the relics stored there. Sam translates the inscription on the box that goes along with it, and when he recites it a glowing door with a keyhole opens in the wall. Sam prepares to go through, telling Castiel that the angel needs to stay there to buy Dean some time.

Castiel tells Sam that his internal compass is working perfectly. Sam goes through the door and finds himself in the Library. There are dead Reapers everywhere, and the door closes behind Sam and vanishes. Sam steps walks through the archives and comes closer to hearing Reapers screaming in pain.

One male Reaper is lying in front of the Shadow in Meg's form. The Reaper says that Billie won't come, and the Shadow tells him to keep praying. Billie doesn't appear, and the Shadow casually snaps his neck with a telekinetic gesture. She senses Sam and teleports him in front of her, and says that she and Billie need to talk but Billie isn't talking to her. The Shadow doesn't trust Billie to keep her word, and tells Sam that Billie wants to become God and send everyone back to where they belong, meaning everyone resurrected will die and everyone from alternate worlds would be sent back to places that don't exist and will die.

Sam meets the Shadow in Meg's form

Sam meets the Shadow in Meg's form

The Shadow points out that Sam is in Chuck's Death Book, and Billie is the only one who can read it. She figures that if she hurts Sam, Billie will come. The Shadow telekinetically tortures Sam, and Sam says that Billie sent him. When the Shadow stops her torture, Sam says that they're trying to kill Chuck and Billie sent him to get the Book. Sam figures that the Shadow can't go to Earth, and it confirms it can't unless summoned due to Chuck. Sam says Billie is on Earth waiting for Chuck and Amara to die, giving the Shadow the choice to either give Sam the Book so they all win and Billie will put it back to sleep, or it can kill Sam and they all lose... and the Shadow will never go back to sleep.

Sam returns to the bunker with the Book. Castiel tells Sam that Amara is there with Chuck, and Sam tells him that they have to stop Jack from killing them, just as Dean arrives with Jack clutching at himself. As they head to the room where Chuck is, Sam tells Dean that they're all being played by Billie and she'll take over as God. Dean says that he doesn't care, as long as Chuck dies. Sam stops Dean, begging him to listen to reason.

Dean draws his gun at Sam, telling him to move

Dean draws his gun at Sam, telling him to move

Amara tells Chuck that it's not too late and he can still choose the world and them. Chuck orders her to shut up, tells Amara that Dean's rage is winning out in the end, and that this is his real ending. Suddenly, Dean draws his gun on Sam and orders him to move.

Chuck explains that he engineered the whole thing and messed with a few outcomes to get the ending he wanted. Amara tells Chuck that the Winchesters just want to trap him, however, he tells her that they actually want to kill both of them using Jack.

Sam begs Dean not to shoot him, and Dean insists that he has to end it. Sam attacks Dean, who punches him to the floor. Sam explains that if Billie takes over, everyone goes back to where they belong. Bobby and Charlie will be sent back to a world that doesn't exist, and everyone they've saved will die again. Dean tells Sam that they don't have a choice, but Sam insists that they always have a choice. Sam says that they can't get out of their way, and Dean says that he'll trade everyone for killing Chuck. When Sam asks if Dean would sacrifice him, Dean hesitates.

Amara chooses to join with Chuck due to Dean's betrayal

Amara chooses to join with Chuck due to Dean's betrayal

Amara insists that Dean can't hurt her, but Chuck says that he can lie to her. Chuck says that humans will break their hearts every time. Chuck explains that the only one who will ever really "get" them are themselves: and offers the two of them back and together. Chuck tells Amara that together in balance, they can create something beautiful and forget about all of the pain. He extends his hand, and Amara takes it and is absorbed into her brother.

Dean insists that Chuck has to die, and Sam begs his brother to trust him. He always thought that Dean protecting him was the only thing he could always count on and asks his brother to lower his gun. As Dean finally does so, Chuck smashes into the hallway and tells the group they failed what he wrote yet again.

Jack starts to ''detonate''

Jack starts to ''detonate''

Chuck explains that he and Amara came to an understanding, and tells Castiel that all of the versions of himself did what they were told... except for the "real" Castiel. He angrily says that they're all too "broken" to do what he wants, and he's over all of them. The Winchesters don't care, and Chuck tells them that he's going to throw out his "broken toys". He doesn't care if they kill each other or not, and they can have fun watching Jack die.

As Chuck teleports away, Jack starts to "detonate".[1]

Trivia[]

  • Some of the episode's format is similar to that of Stuck in the Middle (With You) with the captions showing when a part of the episode focuses on a specific character.
  • This is the first time that Jack interacts with his great aunt.
  • God returns to the Main Universe.
  • Amara reminds Dean of how she told him that they would always help each other the first time that Dean and Amara met in Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire.
  • Dean reveals that he no longer considers Jack to be family, or at least not as much as he considers Sam and Castiel as family.
  • Chuck confirms that Dean and Amara's relationship was not of his doing, showing disgust at the very idea.
  • Chuck admits that while he is aware that Jack has been groomed to be able to kill him by transforming himself into a bomb, he isn't capable of reading his Death Book.
  • Amara uses her powers by snapping her fingers for the first time in this episode similar to both Crowley and Chuck.
  • This is the first time in a millennia that some of the angels have seen God.
    • It is likely that the angels who came to greet Chuck in Heaven were the humans converted into angels by Jack in the season 14 episode Jack in the Box. Their swarming behavior is unusual among angels, who are disciplined tend to be mindful of hierarchy; and one of them calls herself Crystal, a popular name among Americans, but one that is not in tune with the angelic naming convention in the series, as all angels until then had their names taken from the Bible or other sources of Jewish religion.
  • Dean and Jack meet Adam, the First Man. Adam reveals that the plan to kill God is actually his and Billie has simply been helping him and Serafina out.
  • Sam and Castiel locate the Key to Death previously mentioned by Sergei in Last Call.
  • The incantation on the key to Death's library is: "Viator mortalis, cave, quoniam scias Clavem Mortis pensare graviter. Ii tamen desideres, ut introeas illum abyssum obscurissium artis, opus est tibi porta." Roughly translated it means: "Mortal traveler beware, because you know that the keys of Death weigh heavily. However those that crave to enter the bottomless abyss may do so through a work of art."
  • One of the objects in the bunker resembles the Holy Grail from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
  • Amara learns of the Winchesters' betrayal in wanting to kill her and not just trap Chuck.
  • This is the first time that Sam meets The Shadow who continues to use the form of Meg.
    • The Shadow confirms to Sam that the real Meg is still dead.
  • The Shadow reveals that Castiel's visit in Destiny's Child shook its faith in Billie.
  • Sam learns Billie wants to take over as the new God and has been planning to use Jack to destroy Chuck and Amara so she can fill the power vacuum. Supposedly, this is due to her wanting everything to go back to the way she feels that it should be.
  • The Shadow reveals that God having no power over the Empty is actually just "sweet little lies" that Billie promised to fix for it, thus explaining why God was able to resurrect Castiel so many times as well as Lilith.
  • Chuck reveals that Billie's plan to kill him has been part of his manipulation, which he had planned to get Dean and Sam to kill each over their disagreement of using Jack as a suicide bomb.
  • Amara is absorbed into Chuck although she is still alive somewhere inside of him.
    • Amara chooses to join with Chuck due to the pain and grief she feels from Dean's betrayal.
  • Chuck paraphrases Castiel from Lazarus Rising and Naomi from The Great Escapist while talking about Castiel.
  • Chuck reveals that the Main Universe Castiel is the only version of him that failed to do what he was supposed to after resurrecting Dean from Hell.

Quotes[]

  • Chuck/God: Okay... what do you want?
  • Amara: Balance... something we've never tried before... creation and destruction, light and dark, brother and sister united again, but on behalf of one world... this world. True balance. The way it was always meant to be. Hmm. But you can't. You only care about your pleasure. Your story. Well, I guess that makes you the villain.
  • Chuck/God: Villains get all the best lines.

  • Sam: Billie wants to take over?
  • The Shadow: Become the new God. Classic narcissist, right? She's all tingly for the rules, the good old days.
  • Sam: What is that supposed to mean?
  • The Shadow: Everyone back to where they belong, realities, dimensions, graves. What should be dead dies, angels off Earth, demons back to Hell and I go back to sleep. Or I'm supposed to. Except, again, trust issues. But you, you're Sam Winchester. You're in God's book.

  • Amara: You orchestrated this?
  • Chuck/God: What part of omniscient do you people not understand? So I can't read my Death book. So what? I control space and time. Just plant a few visions, goad Death a little... mess with a few outcomes. And... bada-bing. I mean... They think they can kill me?

  • Dean: There's nothing else we can do, okay?! We just gotta get out of the way.
  • Sam: No, we can't get out of the way, Dean, not this time.
  • Dean: I don't care if Billie gets what she wants! I don't, man! I'd trade it all-- I'd trade 'em all for Chuck in a heartbeat!
  • Sam: What about me? Would you trade me?

  • Dean: Chuck has to die. He has to! Otherwise He'll keep us tap dancing forever, and I can't live like that, man! I can't live that! I won't!
  • Sam: I know you feel like that right now, I know you do. But you gotta trust me. My entire life, you've protected me -- from Dad, from Lucifer, from everything. I didn't always like it, you know, but... it's the one thing in the whole world that I could always count on. It's the only thing I've ever known that was true. So please... put the gun away. Just put it away, and we'll figure it out Dean, we'll find another way, you and me. We always do.

  • Chuck/God: Are you kidding me?! After everything, all that, you -- you did it again!
  • Castiel: Where's Amara?
  • Chuck/God: Amara. Amara. She's in here somewhere.
  • Castiel: What, you consumed your sister?
  • Chuck/God: We came to an understanding, so spare me your contempt Castiel, the self-hating angel of Thursday. You know what every other version of you did after "gripping him tight and raising him from Perdition?" They did what they were told. But not you. Not the "one off the line with a crack in his chassis." All of you. You know, I tried and I tried and I tried, but you're all just too stupid, too stubborn. Too broken. You know what? I'm over it. I'm over you.
