Gabriel (guest star Richard Speight Jr.) is back and drags Sam and Dean into his plot for revenge on the demigods who sold him to Asmodeus. Meanwhile, Jack's inflating confidence leads to reckless decisions that could put others in harm's way.

Plot

Sam and Gabriel notice Dean is gone and realize he's after Loki, as Gabriel the demi-god is his to kill before they run after him.

Jack's Wings — Jack shields Mary from Kevin's suicide attack.

In Apocalypse World, Kevin reveals to Jack and Mary Winchester that he was told to kill their comrades in front of Jack so that Michael can taunt Jack with his loss of those he protects. Mary tries to talk him out of it, stating being in Heaven will be nothing but memories. However, Kevin is too unhinged to listen and activates a sigil carved into his chest to commit suicide, producing an explosion that results in the death of numerous rebels under Jack's protection alongside Kevin. Jack immediately shields Mary from the blast with his wings.

At that moment, Dean is in the penthouse where he finds Loki who recognizes him as the famed hunter. They trade words with Loki asking if Dean wanted to know why Gabriel wanted him dead. Dean claimed not to care, though Loki recognized that Dean did "a little bit" and explained that his treatment of Gabriel stemmed from the death of his father Odin. Hearing this, Dean pointed out that it was Lucifer who killed Odin, as Loki told him that Odin was at the hotel in the first place because he was there to deal with Gabriel's brothers. Dean justified that Gabriel couldn't prevent The Apocalypse, as Loki told Dean about Gabriel's promise when Gabriel took on the persona of Loki and how Gabriel broke the promise when he showed up at the hotel which cost Odin his life. Loki pointed out that despite their differences, Odin was still his father and he didn't want Odin dead.

Loki asked what Dean would do for his father, he approached Dean who stabbed Loki with the sword. However, Loki proved to be merely a projection that Dean couldn't harm, but that could hurt Dean. The projection was dissipated when Sam arrived and shot it.

In Apocalypse World, Jack cradles the unconscious Mary's form as he looks upon the carnage caused by his arrogance.

Gabriel kills Loki — Gabriel gets his revenge

As he goes after the Winchesters, Gabriel is confronted by Loki in the hallway outside and noted that Gabriel didn't have the sword designed to kill him. Gabriel claimed that he "wanted to do this one old school" and tossed away the sword he was holding. Loki telekinetically flung Gabriel against a wall and began viciously kicking him and mocked Gabriel's inability to keep one promise and then have the audacity to ask Loki for help again. Loki continued his attack, demanding to know if Gabriel thought that he and his sons deserved to die for Gabriel's spinelessness. As Loki grabbed Gabriel again, Dean slid him the correct sword and Gabriel pinned Loki to the wall, holding the sword against his chest. Helpless to stop Gabriel, Loki mocked Gabriel for needing someone to save him again and called Gabriel a joke and a failure that stood for nothing and would eventually die for nothing. Telling Loki "you first," Gabriel drove the sword through Loki's heart, killing him.

Back in Apocalypse World, Jack and Mary talk and she consoles him as they look upon the bodies.

On Earth, Gabriel thanks the brothers for their help even though he knew they weren't keen on it. They tell him its no problem while Gabriel decides to help them in defeating Michael, as they question his change in mind which he states is because he promised. Gabriel told them he has decided to move on from his past as a Trickster now that he had his revenge and they accept his change. Sam speaks to Gabriel and asked how he really felt as he replied that he felt good about it. Though in truth, Gabriel really felt empty and believed he had nothing more to do.

Returning to the bunker, Sam tells Dean that Gabriel is being helped in settling in by Castiel as the brothers prepared to open the rift again once Gabriel has enough grace. Sam then confronts Dean on his leaving to kill Loki alone as he states that it looked like they could handle it but Sam sees he's lying. Sam then asks about his recent treatment to him lately such as going to Apocalypse World with Ketch and having him miss out. He then hears Dean voice his lack of concern for himself and that he only cares about what happens to him mentions the last time the Apocalypse occurred Sam died and that he doesn't want that to happen again as Sam tells him no matter what happens they will do things together even if it means death before he leaves out.

This is the second episode of the season that Richard Speight Jr. directs with War of the Worlds being the first one. This is also his fifth time directing on Supernatural overall.
- He is now tied with Jensen Ackles as the cast members with the most directed episodes in the series.
- Along with directing the episode, he also plays the dual roles of Gabriel and Loki at the same time.
This episode marks the first time we see Jack's wings.
This is the fifth time a character faces another version of their character in the same scene with Dream A Little Dream Of Me in Season 3, The End in Season 5, The Man Who Knew Too Much in Season 6 and The Big Empty being the first four.
- Richard Speight Jr. is the first non-main cast to play two characters in the same scene.
An alternate reality version of Balthazar is mentioned by Jack during the episode. This Balthazar was the leader of one of Michael's armies and was killed in battle by Jack.
Multiple references are made to the Kill Bill series of movies. Gabriel's revenge mission is similar to the main character in Kill Bill. Dean compares Sam's desire to help to Kill Bill. At one point, Dean calls Gabriel "Uma," a reference to Uma Thurman who plays The Bride in Kill Bill. Gabriel also had a death list similar to The Bride. Gabriel's swords are katana-like blades which is the type of sword that The Bride was armed with. Near the end, Gabriel says the line "tricks are for kids" which is also uttered by The Bride.
Dean reminds Sam that he has seen how revenge doesn't end well with both Dean and their father. This is an obvious reference to Azazel and possibly Dean's obsession with Dick Roman in Season 7. Dean had previously imparted this same kind of wisdom to the Darkness in Season 11's Alpha and Omega and got her to let go of her grudge against God.
The pose of Jack and Mary after Alternate Kevin Tran activated the sigil carved into his chest is a reference to the Pietà, a subject in Christian art that depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the body of Jesus Christ.
It is revealed in this episode that Mary was in Heaven during her afterlife time after she destroyed a poltergeist in Home despite neither the Winchesters nor Ash encountering her there in Dark Side of the Moon. Its also revealed that Mary remembers her time in Heaven.
It is confirmed that the alternate version of Linda Tran is dead in Apocalypse World and is in Heaven.
