Summary
CAN DEAN SAVE SAM? — Sam (Jared Padalecki) learns that former Men of Letters, Magnus, once built a magical box and Sam sets out to find it in the hopes it can cure Dean (Jensen Ackles) of the Mark of Cain. However, what he’s not prepared for is the deadly alarm system Magnus set up on the box. When Sam opens the box, he puts both his and Dean’s life in danger.

- The title refers to Magnus’s “Werther Box”, a vault protected with a spell which drives people to suicide. The box is named after the protagonist of Johann Wolfang von Goethe’s 1774 novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (The Sorrows of Young Werther), who commits suicide after being rejected by the girl he loves. The novel set off a wave of copycat suicides in Germany, sometimes referred to as the "Werther Effect".
- This episode marks Benny's first appearance since Season 8's Taxi Driver.
- This is the first time Purgatory shown as setting place since Taxi Driver, rather than showing flashbacks.
