The Universe is the physical plane of existence, which is composed of the space-time continuum. It, most likely, has no spacial edge, however it has a temporal edge, which is its creation by God through the Big Bang, 13.8 billion years ago. It is separated from the higher planes of existence, which are accessible through rituals, gateways, and/or only after death.
History
Before there was anything, there was only The Darkness. Some time after her younger brother God came into existence, God created things to show his sister that there could be something besides them, but Amara always destroyed his creations. Some time after God created the archangels, he was able to seal The Darkness away, although barely.[1] He finally created the current Universe with a Big Bang, after he and his archangels imprisoned The Darkness.[2][3] This allowed God to create the physical plane of existence.
After God created the Angels and the planet Earth, the first species evolved. The angels were unaware which kind of humanoid species would eventually evolve into the modern humans (homo sapiens sapiens), Castiel described the Neaderthal' poetry as in perfect harmony with the spheres, however they died out. Shortly after God left Heaven, the Archangels wanted to rule the universe, however they needed the nearly unlimited power of the Word of God to control something so huge.[4][5]
Characteristics
The universe is a gigantic space-time continuum, which follows physical laws, however it is possible to use magic inside it to override said laws. Together with Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, Avalon, The Empty, God's Bar and The Darkness it represents all of existence in the Supernatural World. It is possible to move forward and backward in time.
Known planets in this universe include the Earth and all other 7 planets of the Solar System and hundreds/thousands of exoplanets.
Trivia
- While in Christian view time came into existence with the universe, in Supernatural there were events before the universe began to exist, implying that time was pre-existent.
- According to general relativity the beginning of time is also the beginning of the universe.[6]
- God called The Impala the most important object in the universe.
- Jeremy Carver said that the war against The Darkness was before the creation of the universe.[7]
- While he was insane, Castiel considered that the Universe was designed to cause conflicts.
