“ | In the beginning, it was just me and sis. And it was fine. But I wasn't satisfied. So I made more. I created the world. But I didn't stop there. No, no, no! I got the bug. So I -- I kept creating. I made... other worlds. Different combinations, scenarios, characters. Different versions of the same characters. You know my -- "my other toys." | ” |
— God delivers a monologue to the Radio Shed Clerk about the Multiverse during his visit to Earth 2
in Galaxy Brain |
The Multiverse is a quantum construct comprised of the Universe, every Alternate Universe, Alternate Timelines, and every Realm in existence, except The Empty. The Multiverse was subsequently destroyed by God in his effort to wipe the slate clean, but Jack Kline eventually restored them.

The Universe[]
The Universe is a collection of stars, galaxies, planets and realms.
Alternate Universes[]
“ | My world? This world? Nothing but failed drafts. And when he realizes that they're flawed, he moves on and tries again. | ” |
“ | Sam: How many are there? How many other worlds, or--or universes, or realities, or whatever? God: I don't know. Kinda lost count |
” |
Alternate Universes are separate universes with their own history, origins, and inhabitants.
An Alternate Universe is a universe with different properties and events from the main one. They are sometimes accessible by rifts opened in space and time through innate power or a powerful ritual.
They were all created by God as mentioned in Moriah and Galaxy Brain. In the latter episode, God began destroying all of his worlds besides of the Main Universe.
In Destiny's Child, Billie states God is nearly done wiping out the Multiverse and will soon turn his attention back to the Main Universe.
In Drag Me Away (From You), Billie reveals that God has completed his destruction of the multiverse and now there is nothing preventing him from returning to the main universe.
In Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye of The Winchesters, Jack is confirmed to have restored the Multiverse.
Known Alternate Universes[]
- The French Mistake
- Apocalypse World (Mary Campbell refused to make a deal with Azazel)
- The Bad Place (A wooded world that appears to be ruled by unknown creatures)
- Yokoth and Glythur's World (A universe mostly consumed by the gods Yokoth and Glythur)
- Earth 2 (a world similar to Earth where God began the destruction of his creations)
- HunterCorp World (a world where Sam and Dean are hunters spoiled by their father who ran a hunting company)
- Scooby-Doo Universe (a world where the Scooby-Doo characters live)
- A universe where Sam says "yes" to Lucifer, and Lucifer kills Dean after Dean fails to kill Lucifer with the Colt.
- A universe where Dean is a Knight of Hell, has the Mark of Cain and kills Sam with the First Blade.
- A universe where Demon Blood corrupts Sam and he kills Dean.
- A universe where everything is in reverse.
- It's unclear if by this God meant everything is reverse because events occur backwards (up until the point of the episode before it in Jack in The Box, and the Winchesters fight Azazel last), or things are opposites, such as Gabriel is the oldest Archangel and Black Eyed Demons are the strongest, or some combination of the two.
- A universe where the color yellow doesn't exist.
- A universe inhabited entirely by squirrels.
- The universe where Supernatural: The Animation takes place.
- The universe where the Akrida originated from.
- Countless unseen and unnamed universes.
- Monster Club Universe, the universe where The Winchesters takes place (a world where the Men of Letters were destroyed by Joan Hopkins and John and Mary form the Monster Club in 1972)
Alternate Timelines[]
Alternate timelines are the product of time being altered, resulting in a divergent timeline. There are an infinite amount of these.
Realms[]
Realms are separate planes of existence within one particular universe.

Trivia[]
- Mary Winchester was trapped in Apocalypse World with Lucifer. However, Lucifer managed to escape in War of the Worlds.
- She and Jack Kline were trapped in Apocalypse World together from The Bad Place to Exodus before returning to their universe.
- Kaia Nieves was trapped in the Bad Place for about two years from Wayward Sisters to Galaxy Brain after she was thought killed by Dark Kaia.
- Virgil is the first and longest character to be trapped in an alternate universe.
- The French Mistake is the only known universe without magic. A Goblet of Blood still works there though and can reach someone in the Main Universe. Additionally, the magic in the Bad Place is incompatible with the Main Universe as seen in the fact that the magic that the alternate Kaia used to open a rift did not work for her in the Main Universe to return home.
- While using Kaia's powers in an attempt to locate Mary Winchester, Jack sees windows into several different realities, one of which appears to be a paradise.
- The Apocalypse World is the most recurring alternate universe.
- Season 13 featured the most alternate universes and the most appearances of alternate universes. It also has several rifts open between the universes throughout the season.
- In Wayward Sisters, a rift was open between the Bad Place and the Main Universe for a few days. As a result, creatures from that alternate universe crossed over into the Main Universe. Though several were killed, Sam suggested that more creatures may have made it through before the rift closed that aren't accounted for.
- In Wayward Sisters, Dark Kaia opened a rift between the Bad Place and the Main Universe that was never seen to close. However, Dark Kaia's inability to use it to return to her world suggests that it closed off-screen.
- Despite Dean having been to multiple alternate universes, when the Winchesters use the Demon Tablet Alternate Reality Rift Opening Ritual to reach Apocalypse World, his hair is enough of a guide to not end up in one of the other universes he has been to.
- Alternate Michael has stated in Nihilism that the alternate universes are God's failed drafts. However, this is unconfirmed and may simply be Michael's bitter belief instead of actual fact.
- When Sam asked God about the alternate realities, God dismissively admits that he found the alternate universes to be boring but at the same time God did seem offended when Sam asked him if what Michael said is true, indicating although God doesn't have much liking to the alternate universes, he doesn't actually consider them failures.
- However, it's revealed that, despite the alternate realities offer what God wants, he finds them to be distractions in comparison to the original universe, which is the one he truly cares about.
- According to God in Galaxy Brain, some of these universes are complex in destroying as some require time to be destroyed while others are erased easily.
- It is not entirely clear whether Avalon and Oz, where fairies live, are part of the Multiverse of God.
- It's unknown how there can be multiple versions of Primordial Entities such as the Archangels and Death, since they predate Creation. It's also unknown how there is an alternate version of the Mark of Cain that corrupted an alternate Dean Winchester, as it was created as a seal to imprison Amara, who there would reasonably be only one version of.
- However, in Alpha and Omega, Amara did mentioned that, before sealing her, Chuck created many things, only for his sister to destroy them soon after, and that was the reason why he created the Archangels: to fight her and seal her away, so that Creation could come to be. It's possible that, since technically Creation started before the creation of the Archangels with the worlds destroyed by Amara, then the Multiverse started with those destroyed worlds as well.
- It's also possible that the concept of Multiverse started after Chuck and Amara became separated entities with the event of the Big Bang. Because Chuck and Amara are the very entities that sustain reality itself, they are the only versions in existance, while everything that came after them are bound by the rules of the Multiverse.
- The Winchesters takes place entirely in an alternate universe, although Dean Winchester, Bobby Singer and Jack Kline from the main universe of Supernatural visit it.
Lore[]
In Hindu mythology, there are many stories featuring multiverses.
The gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva; are in charge of the creation, preservation, and recurrent reformation of infinite universes that all exist simultaneously. Brahma creates universes; Vishnu preserves and maintains them; then Shiva destroys and reforms them when their lifecycle is at an end. Once their lifespan has expired, Shiva will then destroy the realm; at that time there is nothing left but an endless ocean.
In the Vaishnavism sect of Hinduism, it is Vishnu's exhaling that creates infinite universes, and his inhaling destroys them. Each universe has size & lifespan according to the number of heads of the Brahma in it. Our Brahma has 4 heads so ours is the smallest kind of universe available.
Of those countless universes, O Rama, in some there are only plants; some have Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and others as the presiding deities, and some have none at all; in some there are only animals and birds; in some there is only an ocean; some are solid rocks; some are inhabited only by worms; some are pervaded by dense darkness; in some gods dwell; some are forever illumined. Some seem to be heading towards dissolution; some seem to be falling in space towards destruction. (Section III. Utpatti Prakaranam - chapter 29-30)
Every universe is covered by seven layers — earth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false ego — each ten times greater than the previous one. There are innumerable universes besides this one, and although they are unlimitedly large, they move about like atoms in You. Therefore You are called unlimited. (Bhagavata Purana 6.16.37)
Lord Shiva said: “My dear son, I, Lord Brahma and the other gods, who rotate within this universe under the misconception of our greatness, cannot exhibit any power to compete with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, for innumerable universes and their inhabitants come into existence and are annihilated by the simple direction of the Lord.” (Shrimad Bhagwatam 9.4.56)
