Terry Sloan makes a confession to the priest of St. Philomena's Church, Father Delaney, who absolves him of his sins. As Terry is leaving the church, a spirit monitors him from above before taking possession of Terry.
Under the spirit's influence, Terry picks up a candlestick and walks outside with it. He then stops and proceeds to cut himself open with it.
Terry's death alerts Sam and Dean Winchester to the city. Terry is one of a couple of Catholic men found dead shortly after making a confession. While Dean initially suspects the priest is at fault, they find out about Isabella, a ghost who has been targeting unfaithful men.
