Terrence Naylor is a 19th century wrecker and later ghost.
History[]
In the 19th century, Naylor is a wrecker captain, doing rescue and salvage of the boats that are regularly getting damaged on Key West's reefs which was an extremely lucrative business. To Naylor, there is nothing more important than his house which he builds with his own two hands with material that he bought with the money that Naylor earns working on the wreckers.
Naylor has a wife named Agnes who bears him children and Naylor retires to watch his children grow up. Agnes later dies of tuberculosis and Naylor buys another boat, but the business had changed for the worst, particularly after the American Civil War ended badly for the South. In 1871, Naylor's boat sinks in a storm, and he drowns. Naylor's body is buried under the walnut tree in the garden of his house. At Naylor's request, there is no coffin so that his remains could fertilize the garden.
After Naylor's death, his ghost begins haunting his house and people could hear his voice in the night. Naylor's descendants live in the house for decades until around the 1970s when someone tried to turn it into a museum. After that fails, an old woman turned the Naylor House into an inn and sells it to Nicki and Bodge when she retires.
In 2008, two demons cast a spell that supercharges all of the spirits of Key West. Naylor appears to Dean Winchester who is surprised by how coherent the ghost is compared to ghosts that he had encountered in the past. Naylor reveals that he is well-aware that he is dead and a ghost and is less than pleased to learn what had become of his home. Naylor explains that he had tried and failed to communicate with others before, mostly resulting in screaming, and tells the Winchesters his backstory. Naylor is shocked when he learned that it is 2008, having thought that they had to be approaching the turn of the century at most. While Sam calls Bobby Singer, Dean explains to Naylor that something on the island is messing around with the dead and once the hunters dealt with it, Naylor could either go back to normal, or they can salt and burn his bones to put Naylor to rest. Naylor agrees not to disturb Dean for the remainder of his stay in exchange for Dean laying his soul to rest once the hunt was over.
Naylor later pops up again to ask Dean for an update and Dean tells the ghost that they believe that a demon had cast a spell to make the ghosts of Key West more powerful. Naylor is repulsed by this news and eager to be laid to rest as his existence had already been hellish enough being stuck as a ghost, but his new level of awareness only makes that worse.
Along with the other Key West ghosts, Naylor is drawn in by the ritual Alberto and Fedra perform to control the ghosts of Key West. However, Naylor and the others are freed when the Last Calusa attacked the demons, killing Alberto and forcing Fedra to flee.
When Dean returns to the Naylor House with Bobby, the two explain to the ghost their plan to use the power of the ghosts of Key West to fight the Last Calusa and Naylor agrees to do whatever he can to get the other spirits to cooperate. During the battle, Dean channeled the protective instincts of Naylor who had always put the crews of his ships first to help shield Sam and the Last Calusa's other victims. After Sam salted and burned the bones of some of the spirits making up the Last Calusa, Dean drew on all of the spiritual energy of the ghosts of Key West to finally destroy the Last Calusa with Naylor whispering his mind "for my poor Agnes." Afterwards, the spell ended, and the ghosts were released from Dean's body.
The next day, Naylor, who is still coherent despite Fedra having been exorcised, asks Dean to complete his end of their deal. Sam, Dean and Bobby dig up Naylor's remains and spread salt and lighter fluid over them. Taking the opportunity to speak at what's essentially his own funeral, Naylor gives a surprisingly sentimental speech before Dean ignites his bones and Naylor fades away.
