Supernatural: Origins #3 is the third issue of Supernatural: Origins and is set in the Supernatural universe. It was released in September of 2007, it is a prequel to the TV show.
Story[]
1991[]
In 1991, Sam Winchester finds his brother, Dean Winchester, packing his bags and questions where he is going. Dean confesses that he is leaving as he cannot handle the situation and that during three in the morning, their father, John Winchester, came back to the motel room covered in blood and yelled at him to go back to bed though Sam rationally suggests he was just tired which Dean believes but then still plans to leave his brother and father believing that it would be for the best and promises Sam that he will find his younger brother again.
Present Day[]
In present day, John tells his sons that they are going somewhere with Dean questioning where their Uncle Jacob Campbell is. The man who had saved John previously[1] lies and tells the two that Jacob has gone on a trip and insists the two Winchester boys call him Uncle Hunter. Before getting into the Impala, John and Hunter talk about what the hellhound that killed Jacob with Hunter admitting that it was not behind Mary Winchester's death but that the real killer must be its master to which John pinpoints as being a demon.
Hunter and the Winchesters arrive at the Harvelle's Roadhouse where inside, they meet a woman who introduces herself as Ellen Harvelle and the man working behind the bar is her husband, William Harvelle, she tells the two men to relax and that she will look after Sam and Dean, explaining that she has a daughter of her own around Dean's age. After sitting down, John explains to the other hunter, Ichi, that he and Hunter are looking for a hellhound with Ichi also explaining that he is on his own case tracking down a Heeler. all agreeing to go though John refuses to allow his son to come with them, Ellen suggests that her niece can take care of the two and introduce them to Jo.
John, Hunter and Ichi, leave the Roadhouse and make their way into the woods once armed to track down a Heeler which was last located in a small cabin. Upon discovering its empty, John is then attacked by a shapeshifter in the form of the heeler but is given a chance to kill it though misses leading it to be able to escape though it is shot in the leg by Ichi though it does not kill it.
Back in the Impala, John laments on missing the creature despite it being two feet from it, Hunter tells him that focusing is the key to saving peoples lives. John then questions Ichi if he is okay though Ichi shrugs it off and claims that he is fine. Outside the Roadhouse, Hunter tells John that Ichi is dead and has been dead since he ran after the Heeler who was in reality a shapeshifter which confuses John who does not believe the situation as he is looking at Ichi but Hunter doubles down on his claim to which the shapeshifter begins to question the two, Hunter then orders John to kill it and the latter complies, the killing is witnessed by both Dean and Ellen who heard the gunshot, John takes his sons away.
In Elgin, Illinois, John leaves his sons with a couple named Bill and Pam for a few weeks telling him that Mary's death is still taking a toll on him and that he just wants to clear his head, he tries to get Dean to say goodbye though he does not respond. In the car, John starts to write things down in his journal as Hunter drives. During the drive, John tells Hunter to stop and gets out for fresh air as he thinks about Mary and his sons. Hunter points out that now that he has discovered the truth of the supernatural, he cannot escape being a hunter.
1991[]
Dean then finds John's journal and reads through it despite not being allowed to and discovers the note his father wrote down when he and Hunter left for the few weeks telling him to be strong and there for his brother. Dean then tells Sam to get off his bed though Sam stays quiet.
