The story so far[]
After the encounter in Lawrence, Kansas, John Winchester makes his way back to his two young sons, Sam and Dean and drives them away to Tempe, Arizona in order to meet a man named Fletcher Gable. During the drive, Dean questions when they can go home though John confesses that they cannot go back to their own home and will instead have to find a new one to which Dean wonders if that is what they are doing but John tells him that they are going to visit someone.
In Tempe, Arizona, John finds the home of Fletcher only for the latter to question him if he is any kind of law enforcement to which John denies and insists he needs help on finding out information on a tooth. Inside, Fletcher identifies it as one belonging to a hellhound but then tells the Winchester father that the last time he heard of a hellhound sighting was in Eureka, California. Before leaving, Fletcher hands John a blank journal and advises him to write down every encounter and to take notes. Once gone, a man in a hat and coat demands to know from Fletcher where he sent the three.
At a Walco general store, an employee recommends a few guns though John asks for anything a size twelve to which the employee hands over. Once in Eureka, John rents the twelfth room at a motel and promises his eldest son that he is keeping him and his brother safe. Hearing the door knock, John orders Dean to hide himself and Sam from the intruder to which he obeys. As the figure emerges, John discovers it is his brother-in-law, Jacob Winchester, Jacob shows concern over John and insists he is there to pick up his nephews though John insists they are safe with him. Seeing no other way out, John then suggests to Jacob to go with him and leaves Sam and Dean with a woman after paying her extra money.
John and Jacob then leave in the Impala and go to the Hidden Hills Cemetery. After a fruitless search, Jacob gives John ten more minutes to find what he is looking for saying that he will leave with Sam and Dean with or without John. After a few moments, John spots a tombstone with the same carvings as the ones on the tooth. Upon opening the tomb, a hellhound comes out and mortally wounds Jacob to the horror of John, the hellhound then attempts to kill John but is stopped by a man with a gun.
The man introduces himself as a hunter and claims that he knew where to come due to being told by Fletcher. The two the leave the cemetery with Jacob's body though John insists on going to a hospital but is told they cannot as nothing can be done due to the injuries sustained. The hunter takes John back to the motel where his sons are kept and tells him that the plan to get rid of Jacob's body involves John's car, the two then make their way to a cliff with a river at the bottom and send the car over the edge with the body inside and once over, the hunter tells John he has a lot to learn about the supernatural. John tries to continue his hunt for the thing that killed Mary on his own but is stopped by the hunter who tells him that as he does not even know what was behind Mary's death, he will need the help.
