At an unknown point in time, Steve became involved in hunting and fathered a daughter who was living with a roommate at the time of his death. He would send presents to his daughter with the last thing he sent being a set of waterproof pajamas.
Due to his status as a hunter, Steve secured his home by investing in a security system which included an alarm and cameras for both the inside and outside of his house. He would keep his hunting equipment locked away in a close located in the room he was murdered in.
During the week in which Sam Winchester did not remember what had happened to him, he took Dean to Steve's house while trying to find out what had happened only for the two to come across the corpse after discovering he was a hunter. Needing answers, the Winchesters then investigated the footage only to see Sam being the killer though still unclear to both of them at the point that it was the demon Meg behind the murder.
Still believing he was at fault, Sam admitted to Dean that Steve had a daughter who wrote to him. When Meg was eventually exorcised from Sam's body with the help of Bobby Singer, the latter questioned the brothers on if they had heard about Steve with Dean claiming that they did not leading Bobby to admit that a friend had called to let him know that Steve had died. When Dean further insisted that he did not know who the deceased hunter was, Sam tried to be honest only for Bobby to urge the two to feign innocence as Steve had friends who would go after the killer and that they would not listen to any kind of reasoning.
