Soucouyant is a rare type of vampiric witch in Caribbean folklore, characterized by a pale appearance and a mouth brimming with sharp fangs.
History[]
In Barbados, a small town was terrorized by four soucouyants until a team of hunters tracked down and eliminated three. The last soucouyant escaped to its cave, pursued by a hunter. The remaining hunters detonated C4, causing a cave-in that killed the final soucouyant.
The Winchesters[]
In Art of Dying, the Monster Club visits Elk Falls, Kansas after receiving a call from Tracy Gellar, a retired hunter, who has discovered Darla, an old hunting partner, dead in her barn. Latika's friend Anton, a taxidermist and monster expert, identifies the creature that killed Darla as a soucouyant, a rare vampire witch from the Caribbean. Tracy recounts her last hunt a decade ago, targeting a nest of soucouyants in Barbados with Darla and two other hunters, Rob and Mac. They killed three of the four creatures, but the last one escaped into a cave. Mac pursued it and died in a subsequent cave-in. Tracy theorizes that Rob went back to Barbados to recover Mac's body and inadvertently freed the soucouyant. Suddenly, the soucouyant appears and attacks them, pinning John down until Mary severs its arm, forcing it to flee.
Back at the clubhouse, Anton assists Latika in examining the monster's arm, which seems long dead and contains ectoplasm, indicating the soucouyant's body is possessed by a vengeful spirit. This revelation prompts Tracy to admit that she, Rob, and Darla intentionally caused the cave-in that killed Mac and the soucouyant. When Rob excavated the cave, Mac's spirit took over the creature's body, seeking vengeance. Tracy attempts to justify their actions, explaining that Mac, who suffered a traumatic childhood, was becoming increasingly violent and delving into dark magic. Fearing for their safety, they felt compelled to act against him first. Carlos observes a parallel between John and Mac, and then they realize John has disappeared.
In the barn, John confronts the possessed soucouyant, but Mac's spirit transfers from the dead monster into John. As the group and Tracy converge on the scene, Mac, now in John's body, launches an attack on them. Tracy is on the verge of shooting him (and John), but Latika steps in front of the gun, protecting her friend. She shares her personal ordeal, recounting the trauma she faced when her father returned from war and how she once believed violence was the solution until it resulted in harm. Choosing to renounce violence, she finally reaches out to Mac, who then leaves John's body.[1]
Powers and Abilities[]
- Pyrokinesis – A soucouyant is capable of emitting fire from its arms to assault its victims.
- Sigil traps – The soucoyant, possessed by Mac, utilized pyrokinesis to destroy the sigil in Tracy Gellar's home. It remains unclear whether the warding prevented the soucoyant or the spirit from entering the house.
Weaknesses[]
- Decapitation – Removal of the head is a one of the methods to kill a soucoyant.
- Stake – A stake to the heart is also effective against a soucoyant, though it is not specified if a specific type of stake is needed.
