Supernatural was renewed for a fifth season by The CW on February 24, 2009. The season consists of 22 episodes and aired on Thursdays at 9PM EST.
The season premiered on September 10, 2009 with Sympathy for the Devil and ended on May 13, 2010 with Swan Song.
Season Summary
TWO BROTHERS AND ONE FALLEN ANGEL - AGAINST ALL THE MIGHT OF SATAN AND HIS ARMY!
As the Apocalypse grows closer, threatening to turn Earth into a battlefield soaked with human blood, Sam (Jared Padalecki), Dean (Jensen Ackles), and Castiel (Misha Collins) struggle against daunting odds. New foes arise, including the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (guest stars Titus Welliver, James Otis, Matt Frewer, and Julian Richings). Old friends depart, consumed by the fearsome wrath of Hell. Through it all, the Winchesters are targeted by demons and angels alike, who warn that each brother has a special and terrible role to play in the coming devastation. This harrowing season follows Sam and Dean on their most terrifying Journey yet, one that may lead them to the only ally strong enough to defeat the Devil (guest star Mark Pellegrino): God.

- Misha Collins has been promoted to main cast this season and this is due to the overwhelming positive response of the fans.
- This is the only season where all of the Archangels (Michael, Lucifer, Raphael and Gabriel) are shown.
- There were rumors that this was the last season due to Eric Kripke's statements over the years that he had planned for the show to run for only five seasons.
- This season marked the shows 100th episode.
- Ironically, the episode 99 Problems is the show's 99th episode.
- Despite his apparent death in Hammer of the Gods, Gabriel is revealed to be alive in Season 13's Devil's Bargain. In Bring 'em Back Alive, its shown that Gabriel faked his death, but was captured and sold to the Prince of Hell Asmodeus before the Apocalypse was over.
- Despite his defeat at the end of the season, Lucifer returns as a hallucination in Season 7 and then in person in Season 11, Season 12 and Season 13 before he was finally killed by Dean in the Season 13 finale Let the Good Times Roll.
- A major plotline of the season was Castiel's search for God. In Season 11's Don't Call Me Shurley, the Prophet Chuck Shurley, a recurring character in seasons 4 and 5 who narrated the Season 5 finale Swan Song, is revealed to in fact be God.
- In Dark Side of the Moon, Joshua identifies God as the one who resurrected Castiel following his death at the hands of Raphael in Lucifer Rising/Sympathy for the Devil. In Swan Song, Castiel suspects that God resurrected him once again. In Don't Call Me Shurley, God confirms to Metatron that "I rebuilt Castiel more times than I can remember."
- In Swan Song, when Castiel is resurrected, he comes back "new and improved" as a Seraphim, a rank confirmed by a comment in Season 8's Blood Brother.
- In Swan Song, Castiel suggests that God helped "maybe more than we realize" to stop the Apocalypse. In Season 11, the revelation that God and Chuck are one and the same shows that he did help more than they knew in the guise of Chuck, something he explained as getting "a front-row seat" to the Apocalypse. God comments that he not only helped the Winchesters, he saved them, particularly by resurrecting Castiel so much.
- In Sympathy for the Devil, Lucifer uses the brutal murders of Nick's wife and son to get him to say "yes." In Season 14's Unhuman Nature and Damaged Goods, Nick learns that the demon Abraxas committed the murders. Before Nick kills him in revenge, Abraxas reveals that he committed those murders on the orders of Lucifer himself.
