Samuel Campbell is a character in The Winchesters. He is "Mary's father and the patriarch of the Campbell Hunting family. Samuel taught Mary everything he knows. Gruff and pragmatic, he's a veteran Hunter who prefers actions over words—and it's always his way or the highway. But when Samuel teams up with Mary and her friends to save the world, he won't only have to defeat the most dangerous monster he's ever faced—he'll also have to mend his broken relationship with his daughter."[1]
Samuel Campbell is a younger alternate version of Samuel Campbell from the Supernatural series.
History[]
Early life[]
In 1972, after learning about the danger of a possible Akrida invasion, Samuel Campbell begins searching for the Ostium with Ada Monroe's help as the box is the only thing that can kill the Akrida.[2]
The Winchesters[]
In Pilot, Samuel opens a Men of Letters crypt in a New Orleans tomb, but he is attacked and vanishes, leading his daughter to search for him. With the help of John Winchester, Latika Desai and Carlos Cervantez, Mary is able to follow Samuel's trail to the tomb and recover the Ostium that Samuel was looking for, but she finds no sign of Samuel himself.
Ada Monroe later reveals to the group that Samuel was searching for the box as it is the only way to kill the Akrida, a species of monster not from this world that has been trying to invade for centuries. With the Men of Letters having vanished, Samuel had learned about the Akrida and the threat that they posed. Samuel had found evidence of a Men of Letters office in Savannah, Georgia containing records on the Akrida invasions and his plan was to find where they're coming in and use the box to stop them. With Samuel still missing, Mary and her friends decide to take up his cause and continue the search for Samuel.
In Teach Your Children Well, at the abandoned Men of Letters office, the group finds several dead zombies and a shotgun shell with Samuel's initials on it, revealing that he had killed them. However, there is no sign of Samuel himself who appears to have already taken the files on the Akrida. After the group kills three more zombies, Mary finds a newspaper clipping pinned to one of the bodies pointing to a case in Topeka, Kansas. Although Mary thinks that Samuel has gone there, the others suspect that he's sending them on a case to get them off of his trail which appears to be the case.
In Reflections, John and Mary discover that the Akrida's radio tower has been abandoned along with Samuel's blood. The Akrida Leader reveals that she has captured Samuel and she demands an exchange of the Ostium for Samuel.
As several Akrida corner John and Mary, an injured Samuel suddenly comes to their rescue, using the Ostium to banish the attacking monsters. Mary is finally reunited with her father and supports him as Samuel collapses from his injuries.
In Hang on to Your Life, Mary and Millie Winchester tend to an unconscious Samuel's wounds as John looks on. Although John wants to take Samuel to a hospital, Mary informs him that, according to Ada, the only cure is magic which is what the tea is for. John congratulates Mary on finally finding her father, but she tells John that they did it together. John asks if Mary is out now that Samuel is back, but Mary has to make sure that her father is alright first as much as she wants to hit him as soon as Samuel wakes up. Samuel suddenly wakes up, calling to Mary that he's found a way to find the Akrida Queen. However, Samuel passes out again before he can explain what he means. Under the care of the magical tea, Samuel's fever begins going down.
Samuel wakes up again as Millie is examining the Ostium and asks who she is and what she's doing in his house. Millie introduces herself and explains that Samuel had saved her son's life. Samuel rejects more of the tea until Millie explains that it's from Ada who wants him to get some rest and stop being a jackass, causing Samuel to laugh and sit up, asking where Ada is. Mary explains that she's off looking for some kind of magic to kill the Akrida now that the Ostium has been destroyed while Mary is taking a break. Millie complements Mary, calling her a good kid who has been teaching John hunting and, despite how much Millie hates the danger that it puts him in, she thinks that it's actually good for him. Samuel notes that fighting monsters isn't for everyone and Millie reveals that she's a mechanic who had the bad luck of marrying into this craziness. Millie reveals that her husband was a Man of Letters and Samuel is disgusted to learn that his daughter is teaching family secrets to the son of a MOL man, feeling that the Men of Letters are buried underground with their books while hunters are getting their hands dirty and dying. Upset, Millie leaves, but berates Samuel, telling him that without her husband, Samuel, John and Mary would all be dead right now.
Later, Samuel enters the room where John and Mary are pouring over a map and starts questioning John about his father. Mary cuts her father off and asks him about the Akrida Queen instead. Asking for his bag, Samuel reveals that he was searching for the queen's burial site when the Akrida captured him and that the queen is the key to the whole invasion. However, Samuel doesn't know how that is yet. Samuel explains that he caught wind of a sighting from one of his contacts a few months before that matched the description of the Akrida along with information about the Ostium, so he ran them down. Samuel tries to dismiss John to talk to his daughter alone, but Mary orders him to stay. Samuel hands Mary film canisters containing reconnaissance photos that he took of the locations that everything points to the queen's burial site being in. Mary goes to set up the dark room and John admonishes Samuel for treating Mary more like a soldier than a daughter, informing the man that Mary hasn't slept a good night since he's been gone.
Samuel later attends a meeting with the Monster Club as they discuss Carlos' deal with Loki and defeating the god. Samuel notes to John that a lot has changed as Carlos was just a feral kid with a knack for hunting when Samuel first met him while Lata was terrified and content to just read about hunting, but they have both changed a lot in the few months since Samuel last saw them. John credits Mary for bringing them all together which Samuel states Mary didn't get from him. Samuel warns the other hunters that, as they are up against a monster that kills for kicks, they're in for a fight. Samuel joins the research into Loki and dinner with the Monster Club and he's the one who discovers that Loki can be killed with a reflective blade enchanted with a warrior's own blood.
As the others prepare to enchant silver knives, Samuel joins them despite still recovering from his injuries. Enraged, Mary pulls her father outside and confronts Samuel about his behavior and actions. Samuel finally explains that he kept Mary out of the hunt for the Akrida as he knew that she would've charged in headfirst if Samuel had told her what he was doing. Samuel did everything that he could to keep Mary off of his trail as he can't let her end up like Maggie. Samuel expresses remorse for forcing Mary to follow him into hunting, just like Samuel's own father had forced him which had caused Samuel to hate his father. Samuel reveals that he had heard tall tales of an Oppenheimer, someone who had found a way to nuke all monsters which would've allowed Mary to be free of hunting forever. However, Samuel found the Akrida instead. Samuel can't give Mary back all of the years that he took from her, but he's her father and he has to try. Going back inside, Mary and Samuel join the others in enchanting the knives.
At the club, the hunters find no sign of Loki who teleports in, mixing a drink behind the bar, explaining that he'd booked the club just for them. As the hunters draw their knives, Loki duplicates himself to even the odds with a Loki each fighting John, Mary, Carlos, Lata and Samuel. One of the Loki copies is killed by what appears to be Mary in order to save Samuel, but Samuel recognizes that it's actually Loki and stabs him, explaining that Loki's tell is that he's left-handed while Mary isn't. However, Loki is unharmed aside from slight pain and reveals that the blades were just one of his tricks. With snaps of his fingers, Loki ties up the hunters up and makes Carlos and a bound and injured Jericho appear on stage. Loki challenges Carlos to play to the group and sacrifice his friends so that he can live.
However, Carlos smashes Loki's guitar instead, causing the god to complain that it was a rental. Carlos admits that Loki's right and he did sacrifice everything for hunting, but Carlos got so much more out of it than he could've imagined in exchange. Loki causes Carlos to start to burn up, but the smoke suddenly bursts into confetti that showers everyone and the tattoo vanishes as Loki's curse is broken by Carlos' selflessness. Frustrated, Loki bangs his fist on a table, yelling that humanity always chooses the selfish way out when the chips are down and that he won't lose to Carlos, calling him the portrait of bad choices. Suddenly, Loki's mirror begins to crack and glow and it sucks Loki inside, releasing the hunters. Lata picks up the mirror and discovers the god trapped inside of it and guesses that the price for Loki losing the game is that he is trapped inside of the indestructible source of his power. As Carlos and Mary embrace, Lata repeatedly taps on the mirror, much to Loki's annoyance as he can feel it.
The next day, Millie leaves with the Ostium and explains to Samuel that she's going to try to fix it so that they can try to make the dream of a world without monsters a reality. Samuel thanks Millie for helping to take care of him and for raising a good kid. Mary shows her father the developed photos which all have light leaks on them, causing Mary to suggest that the camera must've been damaged. Mary offers to go back to the locations and check them out together, but Samuel is going to have to leave that to John and Mary as Ada called with a lead on some magic that might help them defeat the Akrida Queen and Samuel's going with her to run it down. Having seen the Monster Club in action, Samuel knows that they don't need his help and there's no point in finding the queen if they can't stop her and the rest of the Akrida. Samuel provides Mary with the instructions for an anti-possession tattoo that can protect against Akrida possession, and he promises to keep in touch this time. Samuel tells John to call him Samuel and notes that he'd lost his hat on the road and John begins to explain how Mary had found and destroyed it, but Mary interrupts him and gives her father a replacement and they embrace before Samuel leaves.
Later, John spots the man who gave him Henry Winchester's letter and the key to the Men of Letters Clubhouse in the background of one of Samuel's pictures, revealing him to be Dean Winchester.
In Suspicious Minds, Samuel is mentioned to still be off searching for a way to stop the Akrida with Ada. In addition, Carlos and Lata can't find any sign of the Akrida Queen at the locations that Samuel had photographed.
In The Tears of a Clown, Mary mentions that Ada and Samuel are continuing to look for magic that can kill the Akrida Queen, but they have now split up.
In Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye, Mary returns home to find Samuel who questions his daughter about some letters that he found revealing that Mary isn't planning on going to Kansas State University anymore. Mary admits that while she's still leaving hunting, she's not sure if college is what's next for her. Samuel asks Mary about how she had talked about leaving town when she finished hunting before college came into the picture for her, but Mary just doesn't know what's next for her. Mary recognizes that Samuel must've found something to come back, and Samuel explains that he got a line on a guy that the Akrida are afraid of from a hunter named Joan who spotted him weeks ago. Joan knows where he is now, and Samuel is going to meet her this afternoon to get the details. Mary asks when they're going to meet her, but Samuel asks her about John's opinion of her plans and realizes that he doesn't know yet. Mary simply tells him that Samuel's not the only one who has been busy finding ways to take out the Akrida, but the Monster Club's solution comes with a catch.
At a bar, Samuel, John and Mary meet with Joan Hopkins who reveals that the Campbell Family and the Hopkins Family had hunted together in the past. However, Samuel has never heard of them before as Joan's family line ended with her a long time ago. Joan explains that the Man With No Name as she calls Dean was digging around in things that should've stayed buried like the Akrida. Joan knows that Dean isn't from around here, but there's only so much that Dean could do as his hands were tied. Although Dean had managed to stay ahead of Joan for awhile, he's not going to be a problem anymore. An amused Joan reveals to the increasingly alarmed hunters that while the Akrida's portal is "not quite up to code yet," she managed to pry it open just enough to toss Dean and his car into it and no human can survive the portal so Dean's body will be torn to shreds for centuries. All that's left of Dean is his journal which Joan has in her possession and lays on the bar.
All of the people in the bar reveal themselves to be possessed by the Akrida and John realizes that Joan is actually the Akrida Queen. Joan explains that she's been following the hunters for awhile now and she knows everything about them thanks to Kyle Reed and their police records. Joan reveals that she is not Akrida, she's human, and she really was a hunter once too and Joan claims to have been just like Mary. John challenges Joan to fight them, but Joan isn't there to fight them, rather she wants them to leave together. Joan also wanted to get them out of the clubhouse long enough for the Akrida to take it over. At the same time, the Akrida burst into the clubhouse where Lata is continuing her research. While Joan could've killed everyone a long time ago, she doesn't want one more hunter to needlessly die. Joan delivers an ultimatum - join her or die - and teleports away with all of the Akrida.
At the Campbell home, Mary gets off the phone with Samuel who has discovered that the Akrida are guarding both entrances to the clubhouse. Samuel is going to look for the portal while John and Mary dig through her family's history in the attic as there has to be something about her in it if Joan was telling the truth about her having history with the Campbell's. Millie later delivers the news that they know where the portal is, Samuel having found a bunch of Akrida near what's left of some old warehouses.
At night, Joan successfully begins to open her portal, but stops as John, Carlos and Samuel, armed with silver swords, approach her. Recognizing that they are there to fight, Joan attempts to appeal to the hunters, offering to save Mary, pointing out that no amount of ghouls that Carlos kills will fill the hole in his heart left by the death of his family and telling John that he's already a monster and doesn't need her sales pitch, but none of the men are interested in Joan's offer. Joan conjures a sword of her own while several Akrida-possessed people, similarly armed, emerge to act as her backup. John engages Joan in a sword fight while Samuel and Carlos battle the other Akrida.
John holds his own against Joan who flings him with telekinesis while Samuel and Carlos are overpowered and held at sword point by the other Akrida. Joan reveals to John that, after the Men of Letters defeated her last invasion, Joan used every ounce of her remaining power to wipe out the Men of Letters, including John's father. Reaching a long stretch of road leading to the battle location, Mary orders Millie, Ada and Lata out of the Impala, not sure that their plan is going to work, and she asks Millie to keep an eye on John for her. Spotting Mary driving at Joan, speeding past a surprised Samuel and Carlos, John reengages Joan in a sword fight, eventually kicking her backwards into the path of the speeding car. Spotting the Impala coming at her, Joan opens her portal in its path on the other side of her. Mary hits Joan with the Impala, killing her, and causing Joan to explode into dust. However, the car passes through the portal as a consequence, and it closes behind Mary and the Impala. With the Akrida Queen dead, the other Akrida all die almost instantly, and their confused vessels run off, leaving the grief-stricken hunters to mourn Mary's apparent loss.
Moments later, the portal reopens, and the Impala emerges with Dean behind the wheel. Helping Mary out of the car, Dean explains that the Impala had kept both of them safe from harm, although there's not a lot that can hurt Dean as he's already dead. Dean was stuck in the World Between Worlds so he stayed close to the portal until the Impala came through and Dean hopped in and grabbed the wheel. Samuel asks who he is and Dean explains that he's a hunter, but one from a different Earth. Ada asks how he got to their universe and Dean reveals that when he died, he made it to Heaven where the Impala was waiting for him so Dean went for a drive before taking a detour through the Multiverse. Dean explains that he was looking for his family and that he comes from a long line of hunters, and he was hoping that somewhere out there was an Earth that had a version where Dean's family had a shot at a happy ending. While Dean was driving, he caught wind of the Akrida who, as it turns out, were one of Chuck's last creations. Chuck had left the Akrida behind as a failsafe to destroy all of existence in case of his defeat in the War for Creation and, since Chuck was defeated, the Akrida were unleashed. The Akrida were eventually going to make their way to the Main Universe where Sam is still alive so Dean couldn't let that happen. John asks Dean about Henry's letter and Dean explains that "I took my little detour, the rules were simple. Don't mess with anything. Well... I gave it a little nudge. Thought it might need a little help. Looks like it worked out pretty well." Now that the Akrida are gone, the Monster Club can choose their own destiny and write their own story.
Jack appears nearby with Bobby, telling Dean that he can get back to his story now. Dean introduces Bobby and Jack to the hunters, identifying them as family before excusing himself to go talk to them. Bobby reminds Dean that he told Dean that he'd figure it out, although Bobby never said that he wouldn't get them into more trouble. Observing the Monster Club, Bobby calls the situation all kinds of weird, and commiserates with Dean on how weird it is to see Samuel with a full head of hair. Jack reprimands Dean for his actions, reminding Dean that when Jack restored everything, he wanted mankind to make their own fate which means no interference from on high anywhere with no exceptions. Dean insists that he couldn't let their world get destroyed, especially since Sam is still alive and he deserves a good long life as does the Monster Club. Dean tells a visibly conflicted Jack that he can cast Dean out of Heaven for his actions if he wants to while Bobby votes that Jack gives Dean another chance. Conceding the point, Jack notes that there's always another case for hunters, even in death. Handing Dean something, Jack tells him to finish what he started if Dean's going to meddle in things and that "after this... it's time to get around to the "there'll be peace when you are done" part of the song."
Walking over to John and Mary, Dean tells them that he wants to give them something before he goes. Dean tells John that his father had kept a hunter's journal that Dean had lived his whole life by. Dean gives the alternate version of his father his own hunter's journal to guide him in hunting, just like John's journal had done for Dean throughout his life. Turning to Mary, Dean tells his mother that he knows that she's thinking about quitting hunting which is something that Dean understands all too well. However, Mary needs to do him one favor: keep an eye out for a Yellow-Eyed Demon. Handing Mary the Colt - the object that Jack had given to him - Dean instructs her to use the gun to kill Azazel should she ever even catch a hint of him. Mary asks if Dean ever found a version where his family had a shot at a happy ending and, glancing at John, Mary, Samuel and Millie - his parents and grandparents - Dean admits that he thinks that he did. As Dean returns to Jack and Bobby, John asks for his name and Dean lies that it's James Hetfield. As the Monster Club watches, Jack teleports himself, Dean, Bobby and the Impala back to their own universe and Heaven.
In the aftermath of their victory, Mary sees Samuel off as her father takes off on another hunt.
