Ruby was a demon who frequently "fought" on the side of the Winchesters. She formed an alliance with an uneasy Sam by promising to help him get Dean out of his deal at first, but the relationship between the two gradually deepened beyond friendship. Unfortunately, she turned out to be a double agent working for Lilith and Lucifer.
Personality
Ruby was an ally of Sam and Dean who "also likes to stir up a little trouble." Ruby is "manipulative" and in control of her situation. Claiming to have been sent back to Hell after the third season finale, Ruby seems different after she returns. In the words of Cortese, who played the character in the fourth season, Ruby did not walk in saying, "I'm going to kick everyone's ass and be tough," but was rather a "total 180 from [how she was] last season". Cortese had auditioned for an unnamed "love interest", and the actress felt the character fell in love with Sam throughout the season. However, she questioned whether this was "true love" or her being "in love with what he can do". Ruby nevertheless reveals herself as a traitor, an aspect Kripke intended from the beginning.
Early Life
A long time ago, specifically around the plague in 1350, Ruby was a witch who sold her soul to Tammi and was reborn a demon after being profusely abused and tortured in Hell. She owns a knife that can destroy demons. Following Azazel's death, she proves instrumental in releasing Lucifer from his Cage.
Season 2
In All Hell Breaks Loose - Part 2, Ruby escapes from the devil's gate along with other demons.
Season 3
Ruby first appeared in the season three premiere, Ruby first appears following Sam and Bobby as they track

down the Seven Deadly Sins. While Bobby and Dean are fighting off Sloth and Lust, the others, led by Pride, go after Sam. The group is then joined by Ruby who gets in on the the fight and attacks the demons with knife; the knife appears to be able to kill demons. Ruby kills two demons while Sam helps her kill a third. Ruby reveals to Sam
that she knows who he is. She then disappears.
In "The Kids Are Alright", Ruby tracked Sam down at a local diner. He asks her about the knife and she claims that she is a hunter. She reveals her knowledge of the Yellow Eyed Demon's special children and that Sam is the sole survivor. Before disappearing again, she told Sam to look into his mother's friends. At the end of the episode, she returned to their motel room to meet with Sam. Sam told her that they were being hunted down, one by one, and she claimed that it was the doing of the Yellow Eyed Demon. Sam finally confronted her about how she knew so much, and Ruby revealed to him her true nature by flashing her black eyes. Sam wanted to banish her, but she baited him, promising to help him break Dean's deal. In Bad Day at Black Rock. Sam tells Dean about his encounter with Ruby, although not about the information she gave him about the deaths of Mary's friends. Dean is angry that Sam didn't kill the demon, while Sam insists that they can use her to get information about the demons they are battling and Dean's deal with the Crossroads Demon.
In Sin City Ruby comes to Bobby while he is working on The Colt. Bobby shoots her with it, but with no effect. Ruby offers to help Bobby make it work, and they succeed - Bobby brings the Colt to a hunt Dean and Sam are on and Sam kills two demons with it. Later, Ruby and Sam argue - Ruby threatens to take the Colt from Sam and give it to someone else who'll use it; Sam threatens Ruby with the Colt. They come to a truce again when Ruby reminds Sam that if he kills her, she can't help him save Dean's soul. She refers to herself as "the little fallen angel" on Sam's shoulder.
In "Malleus Maleficarum", Ruby appeared again to help the Winchesters get to the bottom of what appeared to be a coven of witches. After several of the members die, Ruby appeared after the demon possessing Tammi revealed itself. The demon claimed that Ruby used to be "one of her girls" when she was alive, revealing that she was once human. At the end, she had a conversation with Dean outside the motel room. She told him that all demons were once human, turned into monsters during their time in hell. She compared it to the movie Hellraiser, and revealed to Dean that ultimately, there was no way to save him from his eventual fate.

She helped the boys infiltrate the house Lilith was supposed to have been hiding in, but they discovered that Lilith had changed hosts.
Lilith unleashed her hellhounds against Dean, and Ruby and the boys holed up in a room protected by goofer dust. Ruby asked for the knife, apparently hoping to fend Lilith off, but Dean suddenly reveals that the woman in the room with them isn't Ruby: Lilith had taken over her old host. Her con revealed, Lilith in Ruby's old body let broke the circle and let the hellhounds into the room, and they killed Dean while Sam watched. She then tried to kill Sam with the same white light she used to kill Henriksen, but the light had no effect on him. A startled Lilith left Ruby's former host, leaving Sam surrounded by two corpses.

Her new body first showed up in Sam's room when Dean revealed he was alive. Sam pretended she was a random hookup and she left. He met her later in a diner, and she agreed to help him find out who pulled Dean out of Hell and why. Dean, however, is unaware of who she is. In Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester Ruby has found out that Dean was saved by an angel. She tells Sam she is going to take off for while because she is scared that angels will smite her, even if she is being helpful to him. At the start of In The Beginning, Sam leaves a sleeping Dean to secretly rendezvous with Ruby.
In "Metamorphosis", Ruby and Sam interrogated a demon on the whereabouts of Lilith. When he wouldn't talk, Sam used his psychic powers to exorcise him. Ruby asked him if he stopped getting headaches, and replied that his powers were growing. At that moment, Dean entered the room. Upon discovering Ruby was alive, he attacked her. However, she eventually got the upper hand before Sam told her to back off, which she did.
In "I Know What You Did Last Summer", Ruby dropped the Winchesters a tip about a girl Anna Milton, who is wanted by demons. This prompted Dean to ask Sam why he trusts her so much. Back in the present, Ruby contacted the boys using a maid's body, giving them an address. They head to the cabin, and discover that Ruby has rescued Anna Milton from the mental institution. However, Castiel and Uriel soon show up, declaring that the girl has to die.
After Anna repels Uriel and Castiel, Sam, Dean, Ruby and Anna take refuge at Bobby's place. Pamela Barnes arrives and helps Anna remember that she was an angel who chose to be human. They travel to Kentucky searching for Anna's Grace, only to find it gone. Anna then receives a message that unless Dean hands her over to the angels, they will send Dean back to Hell.
Ruby is tortured by Alastair
In Heaven and Hell Ruby goes to a crossroads and reveals herself to Alastair. She offers to give up Anna, if Alastair will let her and the Winchesters go. He captures and tortures her with her own knife. She won't reveal Anna's location verbally, but she will take him there. Ruby takes Alastair to where Anna and the boys are and the demons and angels attack each other. Anna get's her grace back from Uriel. During the process, Alastair disappears. Uriel and Castiel leave, and we find out that Ruby was part of Sam's plan to bring the demons and angels together to get them to fight each other.
In Criss Angel Is A Douchebag Ruby accuses Sam of wasting time - thirty-four of the seals have been broken. Sam says that he doesn't know where the seals are or how to stop them from being broken. Ruby counters that he needs to go after the source of the problem - Lilith. Sam refuses and Ruby leaves. Later Sam has a conversation with Dean in which Dean says he doesn't see that he and Sam could have a happy future. This leads Sam to rejoining Ruby and the hunt for Lilith.
In On The Head Of A Pin Sam and Dean are heading to meet Ruby, who has some leads on Lilith, when Castiel and Uriel kidnap Dean so he can interrogate Alastair. When Ruby arrives, she uses a spell to help locate where Dean is being held. Sam then tells her that "it's been weeks" and he "needs to be strong". Ruby draws a knife across her arm and Sam sucks her blood - the source of his growing powers and abilities.
In When the Levee Breaks, Sam escapes from Bobby's Panic Room and meets up with Ruby. After letting him feed on her, Ruby tells Sam there are only two or three seals left to be broken. She says only "Lucifer's first" can break the final seal - and that is Lilith. This renews Sam's desire to kill Lilith. She says she has a lead on a demon close to Lilith who is nearby. As they prepare to leave, Dean arrives and tries to kill Ruby, but Sam stops him. Ruby leaves as the brothers start to argue and fight.

In Lucifer Rising, Ruby and Sam pursue Lilith to kill her before she breaks the Final Seal. In doing so, Ruby kidnaps a young nurse possessed by a demon so that Sam can bleed her and drink the blood to increase his power. The demon temporarily releases her control and lets the nurse out, making Sam uneasy about killing her. She accompanies Sam to the church built on the ground where Lucifer was caged and witnesses him kill Lilith. However, there was a catch: Lilith was the final seal, and her death has set Lucifer free. Ruby reveals that she was working for Lilith and Lucifer all along, and that she was using Sam to break the final seal. She happily starts to tell a horrified Sam that Lucifer has more plans for him when Dean suddenly bursts into the chamber. She gloats that it's too late, but Dean doesn't care. Sam grabs her from behind and Dean stabs her with her own knife, killing her.

Powers and Abilities
Though an average Black-eyed demon, she was useful, more so than the rest, acting as an instrument of Lilith herself, edging Sam towards killing her, all so Lucifer could get released.
She did prove stronger than most of her type as she has proven herself able to overpower multiple demons and was successful in keeping thirty of them at bay when asking "who wants to stop me?". However, rarely did she display any of unique abilities, instead relying on punches, kicks, and her dagger.
In spite of her skills, she is terrified of angels, even going as far as retreating when realizing one was on Earth.
- Possession - She is released by the opening of the Devil's Gate, and possesses people, all of which are women.
- Super-strength - She shoved Dean simply, and could hold her own against average demons, however her superiors could outmatch her.
- Telekinesis - She can move things mentally, however she rarely displayed this ability, often employing other abilities.
- Invulnerability - As a infernal being, she is highly resistant to damage, only weakened and stalled by demon weaknesses.
- Magical knowledge - She possesses a broad understanding on spells, rituals, enhancements, etc. She was even able to help Bobby fabricate bullets, making them compatible with The Colt.
- Teleportation - She was able to teleport on at least one occasion.

- Genevieve Cortese, who played Ruby in Season 4, is married to Jared Padalecki in real life.
- In Season 3, Katie Cassidy played Ruby. Both Padalecki and Cassidy had appeared in a Platinum Dunes horror remake, Cassidy appeared in A Nightmare on Elm Street while Padalecki appeared in Friday the 13th.
