Realms or Dimensions are different planes of existence within a universe. Different universes have their own dimensions.

Earth[]

The realm where mortals live. It is inhabited by humans, living monsters, plants, animals, and many other life forms. Beings from other dimensions may crossover Earth but may be limited in how they can interact or remain unless they possess or take the form of a human.

Heaven[]

The realm of the angels and souls of humans deemed worthy to enter into its gates. Guarded by the angels of God and led by the archangels. A select few deities reside or work in Heaven.

The Veil[]

The realm where ghosts that are unable to move on stay. Briefly, it also housed souls until reapers lead them to their afterlife.

Purgatory[]

A realm adjacent to Hell that contains souls of monsters and Leviathans, a place filled with war, death, and chaos. It is accessible to reapers.

Hell[]

The domain of demons and souls sent there through the power of the deals or through a sinful life. This realm houses hordes of dark souls and entities like the Shedim and the Whore of Babylon. In its furthest reaches, is Limbo which has Lucifer's Cage, which primarily held the fallen archangel Lucifer, but also at one point held his true vessel Sam Winchester, and the archangel Michael along with his secondary vessel Adam Milligan.[1]

The Empty[]

A realm where Reapers can send souls, rather than Hell or Heaven. It is inhabited by deceased Angels and Demons and is ruled by the Shadow. It has been stated that the Empty was the first realm in existence, prior even to God and the Darkness, who apparently have no power there. The Shadow later admitted that it was "sweet little lie."

Avalon[]

The realm of the fairies. Houses all fairies inside its own pocket dimension. Oz is also a branch of the fairy world.

Others[]

  • Soul Eater's Nest - This dimension is created by a Soul Eater, a spirit-like entity capable of a limited form of reality warping. This dimension is said to be outside of time and space. It is unknown if each Soul Eater has its own dimension, or if it is connected to other nests of other Soul Eaters, if any.
  • Death's Reading Room - it is unknown if this is its own pocket dimension or part of another bigger realm. Known inhabitants are reapers and Death.

Deities Realm (Non-Canon)[]

Mentioned in Supernatural: Coyote's Kiss, is the homeworld of Huehuecoyotl and other deities, once, a woman who tried to enter in this realm along with Huehuecoyotl, was somehow transformed and became the first Borderwalker.

In Season Six episode You Can't Handle The Truth, a mythology source said Veritas came down to the hilltop, implying the Roman version of Heaven, Elysium, may exist in some form.

Trivia[]

  • Of the realms seen Hell is the only one seen in a dark demeanor reflecting its purpose as a place of torture.
  • Earth is only known realm where everything is tangible and existent. Avalon is unseen and Heaven and Hell are mostly memory reflections or illusions of torture and pain. While physical beings can enter a spiritual realm like Heaven, Hell, Purgatory, etc and the souls there can appear to be physical if a soul leaves one of these realms it doesn’t maintain a physical form on Earth.
  • Dean Winchester is the only known being to have been to all realms of existence (except The Empty), while Sam, Castiel and Bobby have been to all but Avalon.
  • Castiel has been the only being so far, to been shown to have come back from the Empty after he demanded to The Shadow to release him.
    • This was later confirmed in Byzantium, where it is stated that he is the only being to ever escape.
  • Heaven and Purgatory are the oldest of the realms, followed by either or Earth and then Hell. Paradise existed, soon chaos rolled in, and then when evil came Damnation was created.
  • The Earth realm has the most beings walk through it; Purgatory and Hell being second with, monsters, demons, humans, and reapers/Horsemen. Heaven has the least with the least angels, humans, and Horsemen.
