The Raising of Death was a ritual to personify the concept with a spell and control life and death itself on Lucifer's part.
Battle[]
Castiel is on Crowley's tail and passes the word on to Sam and Dean. Crowley hands over the Colt to the brothers so they can take on Lucifer in an act of self preservation. Reapers were everywhere the hunters looked, as harbinger to the arrival of death itself in the flesh. Ellen and Jo make the ultimate sacrifice blowing themselves up to kill hellhounds to give the Winchesters a head start. Dean catches Lucifer off guard and shoots him in the head, but to their horror, he survives. There is no death without life, so Lucifer offers up his demons to summon Death.
Aftermath[]
Back at the house, Sam, Dean and Bobby give Ellen and Jo a hunter's funeral by burning their picture, and a little bit of their hope dies.

- The raising of Death was also the seventh seal of the 66 Seals, despite the fact it was broken after Lucifer was released.
