  • The episode title is taken a bible verse: The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.
    • This is the first episode where the title is taken directly from the bible.
  • Sam continues to have nightmares of other worlds. After learning that God intends for the Winchesters to kill each other in the end, Sam speculates that he is seeing God's possible endings for them through a link created by The Equalizer when Sam shot him.
  • Sam has been texting Castiel who has not responded. He has also not responded to Sam's phone calls about the Equalizer and Lilith.
  • Sam and Dean's Fish and Wildlife IDs are so old that their pictures are from when the Winchesters are much younger.
