The ring was Nick's ring that Sarah gave to him on the day they got married and he gave her hers, and became husband and wife.

At some point before 2009, Nick proposed to Sarah and they each gave each other a wedding ring. After Sarah's death, Nick kept the ring on his finger, proving that he truly loved her. As Nick was soon after possessed by Lucifer, the latter kept Nick's outfit, including the wedding ring on his finger, which was visible during his numerous appearances on screen. He continued to keep his wedding ring on his finger even after possession. The wedding ring was likely probably destroyed when Nick was burned to death by Jack, as he still wore the wedding ring on his finger.

- In an interview at a comic con, actor Mark Pellegrino said Lucifer kept wearing the ring after possessing Nick because he respected family.
