Max Hilby was an attorney, and a LARPer in the roleplaying game Moondoor, and was known as the Shadow King. After he was afflicted by the black Celtic tree tattoo, he thought it looked cool and made it his family crest when LARPing. When Sam, Dean, and Boltar were looking for Charlie, who they thought the "Shadow King" had kidnapped, he told them he did not know where she was.
