Ever since I've been here, I've come across restless spirits of all sorts. They're all kind of... sad, harmless. And eventually, the poor things go to their final rest.

A Lost Soul is a type of ghost. They're typically restless spirits who are unable to move on for some reason, but are otherwise harmless.

Characteristics[]

Lost souls are a type of harmless ghost who appears to mainly be lost and unable to move on, but are neither vengeful or violent.

Some lost souls are the victims of violent crimes who are trapped in the place of their death, particularly if the culprit is a ghost who is powerful enough to trap them. Several of the Van Ness House Ghosts developed what Bobby Singer referred to as "Ghost Alzheimer's" where, over time, the ghosts degraded, developing a condition where they would lose their memory and all sense of self, becoming empty mindless shells.

Some lost souls have been known to move on on their own while others are released by their remains being salted and burned. Other lost souls have been able to move on when the entity trapping them is destroyed.

In the case of Sarah, her soul is tethered to her house by the unfinished business of her murder and her son Teddy's by Abraxas and Sarah's husband Nick's obsession with Lucifer. Although Nick avenges their murders by killing Abraxas, it isn't enough to free her soul as Nick is unable to reject Lucifer which would have allowed Sarah to move on and find peace.

Powers and Abilities[]

Weaknesses[]

  • Salting and Burning their Bones - Like all ghosts, salting and burning a lost soul's bones typically releases their souls to the afterlife. However, this can occasionally not be enough if they are trapped by a stronger ghost.
  • Stronger Ghosts - Lost souls have been on multiple occasions trapped, usually in the place of their death, by stronger ghosts such as Whitman Van Ness, Hugo Moriarty and Avery Meadows. In Hugo's case, he was keeping his victims from moving on even after their remains had been salted and burned. Upon his ghost's destruction, Hugo's victims were released to the afterlife.
  • Soul Eaters - Lost souls who are the victims of Soul Eaters are trapped in the Soul Eater's Nest until the Soul Eater is killed at which point they are released to the afterlife.
  • Resolving the ghost's issues - Some lost souls eventually move on on their own after resolving whatever is keeping them tied to the Earth which was encountered by Sister Mathias with the lost souls at St. Philomena's Church.
  • God - God is able to send a lost soul to the afterlife as he did with Kevin Tran.
  • Reapers - After making a deal with Dean, Billie has the Reaper Jessica take the lost souls of Avery Meadows' victims to the afterlife.

History[]

Season 1[]

In Asylum, Sam and Dean investigate the abandoned Roosevelt Asylum which is haunted by the ghosts of the patients and staff who had died there in a riot decades before the bodies of many of whom were never found. Although mistaken for hostile at first, most of the ghosts prove to be harmless lost souls who are actually trying to warn people rather than harm them. One of the ghosts helps the hunters to identify Doctor Sanford Ellicott as the true culprit and locate his remains.

Season 7[]

In Of Grave Importance, the Van Ness House Ghosts are the lost souls of Whitman Van Ness' victims. Van Ness traps them in the house by keeping their mortal remains hidden. The ghost of Haskel Crane teaches Bobby Singer how to use his powers as a ghost while Victoria Dodd helped Bobby to warn Sam and Dean Winchester about Van Ness. After the Winchesters salted and burned Van Ness' bones and laid him to rest, they returned to the house where Bobby leads them to the hidden remains of Van Ness' victims which they salt and burn, laying the lost souls to rest.

Season 9[]

In Captives, Kevin Tran reveals that everyone who has died since Metatron closed Heaven has been trapped in the Veil, including himself. Kevin directs the Winchesters to the ghost of Candy, a young woman murdered by Del, the demon who is keeping his mother prisoner for Crowley. The Winchesters make contact with Candy through a radio and she helps them to locate and rescue Linda.

Kevin subsequently leaves with his mother until Heaven can be reopened with Linda locating the object that his ghost is attached to.

Season 10[]

In Paint it Black, while checking St. Philomena's Church with an EMF meter, Sam picks up activity, but it's inconclusive as proof that a ghost is the culprit as the church is built on a burial ground.

Sister Mathias later mentions that the church has a number of ghosts due to the burial crypts beneath the church. Most are lost souls who eventually move on on their own, causing Mathias to think nothing of it when she meets Isabella who turns out to be a vengeful spirit.

Season 11[]

In Safe House, after being pulled into a Soul Eater's Nest, Dean and Bobby Singer encounter the Sad People, the lost souls of the Soul Eater's victims. The Sad People are released to their final rests when Sam and Dean kill the Soul Eater.

In All in the Family, Chuck summons the ghost of Kevin Tran and seemingly sends him to Heaven as proof of his identity as God.

Season 12[]

In The Foundry, after meeting the ghost of Lucas Kellinger, Sam suspects that he and the other murdered children are mylings as it fits the lore. Sam and Dean burn the bones of the children, but Mary Winchester contacts Lucas' mother and is able to discover that the children aren't mylings, but rather lost souls and the victims of Hugo Moriarty. Having been kept from moving on by Hugo's ghost, the children are released to the afterlife when Sam salts and burns Hugo's bones.

Season 13[]

In Advanced Thanatology, Avery Meadows traps the lost souls of his victims in his house after murdering them. After Dean destroys the violent spirit, he temporarily kills himself in an effort to learn where the victims' bodies are, eventually finding out from the ghost of Shawn Raider. Before Dean can return to his body, he is pulled away by Billie, now the new Death. As per a deal that Billie makes with Dean, the reaper Jessica helps the lost souls to their proper place in the afterlife. As a result, the Winchesters are able to lead the local police to the bodies, allowing Meadows' victims to be granted proper burials by their families.

Season 14[]

In Prophet and Loss, Nick returns to his old house to discover that the ghost of his wife, Sarah, has been trapped there ever since her murder by Abraxas. Sarah reveals that she is trapped on Earth by the unfinished business of her and Teddy's murders, but Nick having recently avenged his wife by killing Abraxas isn't enough to free her as she is also tethered by Nick's obsession with Lucifer. Sarah calls on her husband to reject Lucifer and free her, but he isn't able to, leaving Sarah trapped as a ghost in their old house.

Season 15[]

In Raising Hell, Kevin Tran resurfaces as one of the Hell Ghosts, revealing that God had sent him to Hell rather than to Heaven as he had claimed.
