Loki is a trickster deity in The Winchesters.
History[]
After Carlos Cervantez quits music to focus on being a hunter, his partner Jericho Kid hits some hard times. Loki approaches Jericho after a gig and asks what he would give to make the kind of music that shakes people's souls. Loki makes a deal with him to make Jericho a great performer and Jericho has a tattoo placed on his arm, and every performance he had to sing to one person who will then burn to death. Jericho, who doesn't remember much of the rest of that night, doesn't put it together until it happens more than once. While Jericho tries to break the deal, Loki tells Jericho that if he doesn't sing to someone, he will burn up instead.
After a performance, Loki follows Brock Billings out and burns him to death despite Brock's attempts to protect himself with warding sigils after figuring out what Jericho was doing. Loki is present at the Knave of Hearts club the next day when Carlos and Lata investigate Brock's murder and both encounter Loki. After learning from a roadie of the strange man who had followed Brock out, Carlos and Lata realize that Loki was responsible.
That night, at Jericho's show, Lata spots Loki amongst the crowd yelling out encouragement to Jericho just before he starts to smoke from the hands. Carlos yanks Jericho off-stage, but Lata finds another man wearing similar attire where Loki had been sitting moments before. Backstage, Loki causes the bartender to burst into flames and burn quickly to ash despite Carlos' attempts to smother the flames. Carlos and Lata confront Jericho who reveals the truth, although he guesses that something must've gone wrong as he wasn't singing to the bartender but to Loki.
Returning to Carlos' van, the three find Loki in the back, but he vanishes when Carlos swings a knife at him, along with the knife. Appearing next to Jericho, Loki reveals that Jericho had set them up as Loki had given him an exit clause to the deal. Shapeshifting into the roadie that Carlos and Lata had talked to earlier, Loki explains that he was getting to know the new talent and he was skeptical at first until he saw Carlos up close. Carlos refuses to make a deal with Loki who turns back into himself, checks out his reflection in his mirror and states that Carlos will if he wants to save Jericho. Loki goes over Carlos' impressive resume, noting that it isn't that of someone who will just walk away. Carlos reluctantly accepts the deal and Loki transfers his tattoo from Jericho to Carlos with a snap of his fingers before making Jericho vanish with another snap of his fingers. Loki hands Carlos a flyer advertising a one night only comeback tour for Carlos, warning him that he needs to sing by sunup or things will get toasty and then he teleports away.
That night, at the club, the hunters find no sign of Loki who teleports in, mixing a drink behind the bar, explaining that he'd booked the club just for them. As the hunters draw their knives, Loki duplicates himself to even the odds with a Loki each fighting John, Mary, Carlos, Lata and Samuel. One of the Loki copies is killed by what appears to be Mary in order to save Samuel, but Samuel recognizes that it's actually Loki and stabs him, explaining that Loki's tell is that he's left-handed while Mary isn't. However, Loki is unharmed aside from slight pain and reveals that the blades were just one of his tricks. With snaps of his fingers, Loki ties up the hunters up and makes Carlos and a bound and injured Jericho appear on stage. Loki challenges Carlos to play to the group and sacrifice his friends so that he can live.
However, Carlos smashes Loki's guitar instead, causing the god to complain that it was a rental. Carlos admits that Loki's right and he did sacrifice everything for hunting, but Carlos got so much more out of it than he could've imagined in exchange. Loki causes Carlos to start to burn up, but the smoke suddenly bursts into confetti that showers everyone and the tattoo vanishes as Loki's curse is broken by Carlos' selflessness. Frustrated, Loki bangs his fist on a table, yelling that humanity always chooses the selfish way out when the chips are down and that he won't lose to Carlos, calling him the portrait of bad choices. Suddenly, Loki's mirror begins to crack and glow and it sucks Loki inside, releasing the hunters. Lata picks up the mirror and discovers the god trapped inside of it and guesses that the price for Loki losing the game is that he is trapped inside of the indestructible source of his power. As Carlos and Mary embrace, Lata repeatedly taps on the mirror, much to Loki's annoyance as he can feel it.
It's later revealed that Loki damaged Jericho's hands to the point that he won't ever be able to play again. Lata takes Loki's mirror and places it in a chest in the Men of Letters Clubhouse as the god protests his imprisonment.
Personality[]
Loki displayed a much more serious and darker personality in The Winchesters than the version from Supernatural. He appears to have a disdain for humans and believes they are selfish and arrogant, claiming that "humanity always picks the selfish way out." His "game" might of been a bet to see if he could actually prove that humanity was flawed.
Despite that he still retains his sense of humour, albeit very sarcastic, often cracking jokes in the middle of fights or trying to get others to enter his game. He started joking while trying to make a deal with Carlos and even joking that is also a hair model while reading Carlos' resume.
Not uncommon among gods, Loki holds himself in high regards saying "every great trickster, and of course I am the greatest trickster..."

Trivia[]
- It is not explicitly confirmed if this Loki is actually Loki or if he is Gabriel disguised as Loki. Gabriel tended to stay unseen during his tricks and only tormented and killed people he deemed contemptible, while this Loki reveals himself and torments and kills innocent people. Although he speaks mostly in the more normal tone that Gabriel use, Loki also briefly uses the more gruff tone used in Unfinished Business by the real Loki. These differences could indicate that this is not Gabriel but actually Loki. His physical appearance and attire are also closer to the Loki seen in Unfinished Business than Gabriel who always went for more casual attire even as the Trickster.
- The episode aired on January 24, 2023. This is Dean Winchester's 44th birthday and also the final week of filming for Season 1 of The Winchesters. Jensen and Danneel joined the cast for a celebration and live-tweeting. During the evening, they called Richard Speight to explain whether it was Loki or Gabriel in the episode. (It was Gabriel disguised as Loki).
- In the episode Lata refers to Loki as a Demigod, wich could be a reference to his actual parents in Norse mythology: Fárbauti (a jötunn) and Laufey (a goddess). However its unknown if he really is a demigod.
- Loki is the only deity we see an alternate universe version of.
