Summary[]
There was something about being there... It felt pure. This episode summary is an official CW press release. It may contain errors. DO NOT CHANGE! |
Lucifer's search for power and influence in a vessel lands him in the White House. The President of the United States (guest star David Chisum) unknowingly makes a deal with the devil, leading Sam, Dean, Castiel, Crowley and Rowena (guest star Ruth Connell) to band together to fight the Dark Lord.
Plot[]
Sam and Dean go to a coroners office, where they are told their comrades are waiting for them. Castiel explains that the body is that of the CEO of almost everything, Wallace Parker, and Lucifer's old vessel. They now believe him to be in the body of an archbishop who knew Wallace. They head to the diocese where no one has answered calls, the lights are off, and a bishop is dying on the floor. The group attempted an exorcism, but failed and many were slaughtered, including the archbishop. Jefferson is praying for guidance, and Lucifer is able to take control over his body after he says "Yes." A secret agent walks in on Lucifer talking to seemingly himself, so people can think he is the president of the USA, and kills the agent before he can question him.
An officer says there was no foul play, and his staff ask him to pray to the lord as he does every morning. Someone places a bible in his hand, which starts to burn his hand. He makes a short speech and concludes with "amen" before the staff departs. As president, Lucifer has Kelly as a secret sexual partner and she talks to him about one day being a father.
Castiel is looking at photos from the diocese and Dean speculates that they should be looking for whoever won the Nobel Peace prize. Crowley gets information that the death of the secret service agent wasn't natural. Then, he comes into the bunker, much to the displeasure of Castiel and Sam, and tells them Lucifer has taken over the President of the USA.
Lucifer tells his head service agent, Rick, that two men, Sam and Dean, will come to try to kill him. He tries to convince Rick to kill them before they come after him.
Crowley goes to pick up Rowena, killing her latest fiancé who cheated on her. Castiel, in the bunker, experiences a daunting scream on angel radio. He tells the Winchesters that a Nephilim has come into being. Lucifer and Kelly are going to have a baby.
Castiel and the boys are driving the Impala when a cop spots their car from the BOLO the president put out and pulls them over. Secret service comes out and a fight starts, ending with the boys at gunpoint. Ketch shows up with a grenade launcher and tells Castiel to wipe the Secret Service memories.
Ketch discusses with possibilities with them what the British Men of Letters has been doing. Dean borrows one of the "toys" the British Men of Letters has to blast Lucifer out of the president. They agree that Crowley is the only one able to get in. He takes Kelly, who was on the phone to say she was pregnant. To prove a point Castiel has Kelly put her hand on the bible which burns her and set the book on fire.
Kelly calls Lucifer and they meet her at a motel, where our group is waiting. When she says she can't have the baby, Lucifer says he has to insist that she has the baby. Sam tries to get Lucifer out of the president's body, Rowena casts a spell to assist, until Lucifer casts out of Jeff's body. Jeff is alive, but knocked out. Castiel gets Kelly out of the motel room and Dean says they got Lucifer, they did it. Sam and Dean are arrested for the attempted assassination of the president of the United States.
Castiel takes Kelly to a diner where she escapes and takes a taxi, leaving Castiel behind. She calls him and says it's her child, she plans to keep it.

- In this episode, Lucifer loses his virginity. After he has sex with Kelly Kline, he looks dazed and amazed, and he says “It’s almost like I’ve never done that before.” In Season 13’s Exodus, Lucifer confirms this when he talks about Kelly and says “lost my virginity to her.”
Trivia[]
- This episode was watched by 1.73 million viewers and got a 0.6 rating.
- This episode is the mid-season finale, and the last to air in 2016.
- The title of the episode is a word play. "LOTUS" is a pun of the acronym "POTUS," which stands for "President of the United States." Meaning, it stands for "Lucifer of the United States."
- This episode establishes that Lucifer has a weakness towards crosses and the Bible.
- Even more peculiar is that a demon named Raul suffered no side effects from wearing a cross around his neck, while Lucifer suffered a burn on his hand.
- Additionally, Lucifer is seen in Rock Never Dies holding a knife with several crosses on it and does not appear to suffer any ill effects.
- It is also strange that the Bible caught fire when it came into contact with Lucifer's baby, because later it turns out that the child has a good soul. Although perhaps this was done because at the time of the episode's creation, the writers and producers did not know whether this child would be good or evil.
- This is the second episode to have an all-caps term or word. The first one was the Season 8 episode, LARP and the Real Girl.
- Lucifer's eyes glow pure red instead of reddish orange as they did in previous episodes.
- In the scene where the Secret Service 2016 Chevy Suburban was blown up, the explosion and subsequent wreckage shows a much older 2004 Chevy Suburban.
- This episode's air date, 12/08/2016, has the same numbers as the season and episode, 12.08.
Quotes[]
- Coroner: [addressing Sam and Dean] Your colleagues are already inside.
- [Sam and Dean walk in]
- Castiel and Crowley: Agents
- Dean: Okay, this has gotta stop. Alright, give me that [takes FBI badge off Crowley's jacket].
- Crowley: Armani!
- Sam: Okay, enough. Let's have a look [lifts sheet to reveal body with eyes burned out].
- Dean: Ooh. Looks like somebody forgot to put on his sunscreen.
- Castiel: This was Wallace Parker, the very powerful CEO of almost everything.
- Sam: And apparently, Lucifer's latest vessel. Wasn't strong enough to hold him.
- Crowley: Lucifer's not content with slutting it from one random vessel to the next. He's moving on to blue chips – celebrities, captains of industry. He just got a lot more dangerous.
- Castiel: [indicating Crowley] I agree with Agent Zappa.
- Dean: Oh, will you stop?
- Sam: Crowley, can we just get the damn news without the drama?
- Crowley: Can I get you without the flannel? No. Still, I endure.
- Lucifer (as POTUS): We have reliable intel that two mentally unstable individuals, possibly cult members, have imminent plans to assassinate me.
- Rick Sanchez: What? Why?
- Lucifer: Because I'm Satan. They think I'm Satan.
- Rick: Not metaphorically?
- Lucifer: Mm. In the flesh.
- Rick: Satan's not real.
- Lucifer: Well...
- Rick: He's a symbol for the simple-minded. A- a comic book villain.
- Lucifer: He's a bit more than that, Rick, to many people.
- Rick: I wasn't briefed on this.
- Lucifer: Well, I'm briefing you now. We've been sitting on it until we had more facts.
