Background

Early Life

A pastor, Jim Murphy was a friend of John Winchester for many years, and was a fellow hunter. They were so close that Jim even looked after Dean and Sam on occasions, and on one occasion where John was searching for a demon that had escaped. Although they hadn't spoken in a year at the time of his death, he still considered John a friend.

Around 1990 or 1991, John left Sam and Dean In Jim's care after Sam was attacked by a shtriga in Fort Douglas, Wisconsin.[1]

Season 1

In "Asylum", Jim was one of the hunters Sam called looking for information on John.

In "Salvation", Jim admits Meg into his church, unaware that she is possessed by a demon. When Meg reveals herself to be a demon, he retreats to a hidden room containing weapons. He throws a knife at her, but she catches it. She then asks where the Winchesters are. When Jim refuses to tell her, Meg uses his knife to slash his throat, killing him.
