You've been 'Garth-ed.'
— Garth to Jenny Greentree's corpse
in Party On, Garth

Garth Fitzgerald IV (born 1983) is a hunter turned werewolf whom the Winchesters first encounter in the episode Season Seven, Time for a Wedding!.

Following the invasion of Michael, Garth was called out of retirement to assist in obtaining information on the latter's monster army. Garth ended up receiving grace of the archangel which caused him to lash out at his friends under Michael's control.

After retiring from hunting, Garth returned to school, became a dentist and opened his own practice.

Biography[]

History[]

According to the British Men of Letters' database, Garth was born in Warsaw, Missouri.

Garth had a cousin named Brandon who, despite having his remains cremated, remained tied to Earth as a ghost. Garth also had a cousin named Frank, who is also dead now, but with whom Garth used to build something. It is never stated what exactly.

Season 6[]

Bobby: Yeah, Garth, what do you got? ... Never heard of a vamp doin' that. It doesn't sound like our kind of thing. Better drop a dime to the FBI.
(Bobby hangs up the phone. Another phone labeled FBI Tom Willis rings.)
Bobby: Willis, FBI. ...No, Garth, not me, the FBI, the real FBI! How are you still alive?
— Bobby's conversation with Garth
in Weekend at Bobby's

Garth calls Bobby for some help on a case he's working, and Bobby tells him that it doesn't sound like a vampire. He advises him to call the FBI with a tip, so Garth hangs up and calls one of Bobby's fake FBI numbers. When Bobby realizes that Garth has called him instead of the actual FBI, he is exasperated.

Season 7[]

Supernatural-–-Time-for-a-Wedding-Garth

Bobby sends Garth to Pike Creek, Delaware to help Dean work on a case, as Sam is under a spell by Becky Rosen. Dean shows him a newspaper article about people who have had good things happen to them recently and are now mysteriously dying in freak accidents. Posing as press, they head to an insurance company where a man was just promoted from junior salesman to CEO, thinking he might be the next victim in their case. When Dean and Garth arrive at the insurance company, Sam and Becky are already leaving. Sam tells Dean that the new CEO, Craig, is clean but Dean and Garth still question him.

SPN 1414

Dean and Garth become sure that the man's wife is the one behind his sudden success, so they confront her, but she refuses to admit to anything, that is, until they save her from being killed by a falling chandelier. Afterwards, she admits to making a deal with a demon. Garth tells her that she needs to get out of town for a few days while he and Dean figure things out. They break into Becky's apartment, and Garth sees Becky's last tweet on her laptop: 'Going on romantic trip with hubster!!!'. Later, after Sam convinces Becky to help them trap Guy, the crossroads demon behind all of the recent deaths, Garth uses blueberry vodka to draw a devil's trap which Becky then lights on fire to trap the demon. He and the other hunters then get attacked by Guy's accomplice, a demon named Jackson, but Becky manages to kill him with Ruby's knife. Crowley appears and takes Guy away to punish him for breaking deals. Back at Becky's apartment, Sam and Becky sign the annulment papers necessary to dissolve their marriage while Dean and Garth watch. Dean tells Garth that he "doesn't suck," and Garth gives him an uncomfortable hug before leaving in his car.

Garth7x18

The ghost of Jenny Greentree is originally suspected to be behind the death of Trevor McAnn in Junction City, Kansas and Garth salts and burns her corpse. However, when the boy's brother Ray dies, Garth calls Sam and Dean for help in finding the real culprit. They learn it is a spirit known as a Shōjō. Garth, with help from Mr. Fizzles, eventually figures out who the shojo's next victim is and tries to save him. Dean, with some help from Bobby's ghost, kills the Shojo. As they part ways again, Garth hugs Dean for the 2nd time and even gives Sam a hug too, before driving off, but not before he remarks that he likes their car, an AMC Pacer wagon.

Season 8[]

Garth appears in Southern Comfort working on a case, and he reveals that he has taken over Bobby's role in the last year.

SPN 0162

After hearing about Mary Lew crushing her husband's head with his own car, Garth heads to Kearny, Missouri where he poses as, of all things, a Texas Ranger—he claims that wearing a suit makes him look like a funeral director.

Garth has taken Bobby's place among the hunting community as Sam and Dean disappeared for a year and someone needed to. Garth has taken to carrying multiple cell phones to presumably act as cover for other hunters like Bobby did, gives out information that hunters need, wears one of Bobby's hats and uses some of his old catchphrases though not correctly. Garth is excited to see Sam and Dean and hugs them, though Dean is not amused that he is "the new Bobby" and the way that he acts like him.

Together they investigate the case, discovering that Kate wrote the name "Allcot" on the wall in blood and that there is green goo. That night at a bar, Garth asks Dean where he was and Dean tells him Purgatory but brushes off questions of how he got out. Garth also reveals he was a dentist before becoming a hunter, and that was how he found his first case. Investigating the name, they discover it is an old girlfriend of the dead husband, but before they can go interrogate her, her son Scott killed someone and wrote the name Sussex on the wall in his blood leaving behind green goo as well. Dean and Garth interrogate the ex-girlfriend, deciding that she wasn't having an affair with the husband and that the wife is apparently holding a grudge for her husband hooking up with his ex on prom night. While Sam investigates, Garth and Dean go through Bobby's journal for information on what they might be dealing with, Garth pointing out the noticeable tension between Sam and Dean and explaining why he has taken over Bobby's role, saying that Bobby belonged to everyone, not just Sam and Dean and is visibly upset while talking about Bobby.

Garth finds in Bobby's journal that a ghost that leaves behind green goo is a Specter and that it is apparently woken up when its grave is disturbed. Garth finds out that the grave of the Confederate version of The Unknown Soldier has been disturbed, though apparently nothing was taken and that night, he, Sam and Dean go to salt and burn the soldier's bones, figuring that that should put the ghost to rest as it does with all other ghosts. Garth suggests they say something before burning the bones, but Dean just says "we win" before setting them on fire.

However, a deputy kills his boss and after finding more green goo at the scene, they realize the ghost isn't gone. After learning that the next person possessed headed for the hospital, Dean goes there to stop them while Sam and Garth go to the library to try to find out who the Unknown Soldier is. They learn a theory that it is Vance Collins, a Confederate soldier who was killed by his Union soldier brother. They realize that Vance had an Indian Head Penny that was stolen.

SPN 1195

Sam and Garth rush off to let Dean know after he doesn't answer his phone, only to find him possessed by Vance and waiting to kill Sam. Garth tries to defuse the situation, believing that Dean won't kill him as he is not angry at him. When that fails, Garth punches Dean, causing him to drop the penny which Garth picks up, but is unaffected by Vance.

Garth is able to melt down the penny, putting Vance to rest though he tells Dean he had a hard time doing it. Garth explains to Dean that he has learned to let all of his grudges go and was thus unaffected by the spirit and Dean puts Bobby's hat back on his head, finally accepting Garth's new role. Garth drives off, giving advice to another hunter to run after learning he is being chased by a Wendigo without a flare gun or flamethrower to kill it with.

In A Little Slice of Kevin, Sam and Dean call Garth to take care of Kevin and Linda Tran.

In Hunteri Heroici, it's revealed he has a safe boat, and is keeping Kevin and Linda Tran there for safety.

In LARP and the Real Girl, Garth calls Sam and Dean to give them a case where a man had all of his limbs ripped off with no explanation. Garth has been tracking hunters via the GPS in their cell phones and now calls them with cases in the area they are in. Sam is visibly disturbed by this and tells Garth off for telling him "you've been Garth-ed" after explaining what he did. As a result, Sam tells Dean they need to disable the GPS in their phones so Garth can't do it again, though Dean admits that Bobby would have done the same.

In As Time Goes By, Henry Winchester has gone missing and Dean figures that he went to find the last two ingredients for a spell to return to 1958, Dean calls Garth to see if there are any hoodoo shops in the area. Apparently Garth gives him the info he needs as he is able to find Henry.

In Everybody Hates Hitler, Dean calls Garth for information on the Thule Society, but neither Garth nor any of his contacts had even heard of it.

In Trial and Error, Kevin Tran mentions Garth as his only companion.

He is also mentioned in Freaks and Geeks by Dean when he says that he'll be sending Garth to check on Krissy and the others from time to time and also by Victor Rogers who tells Sam and Dean that Garth must've been dropped on his head when he was a baby.

By Pac-Man Fever he is out searching for the missing Kevin, along with several other hunters.

Season 9[]

GarthWerewolf

Garth as a Werewolf.

After being missing for several months, Garth returns in Sharp Teeth where he is hit by a car after eviscerating a cow. Sam and Dean find him in the hospital, but he flees. When they follow him, Garth reveals that he is now a werewolf, having been bitten six months before while hunting a werewolf. Before he could kill himself, a werewolf named Bess Myers found him and he fell in love with her and married her. Ashamed of what he'd become, Garth disappeared so no one would know. Garth insists to Sam and Dean that his pack feeds only on animal hearts and don't harm humans, coexisting with them and invites them to join their church services. Garth becomes frustrated with Dean when he remains hostile to Garth's new family and Dean explains what happened to Kevin Tran, saddening Garth greatly as he cared for the young Prophet. Soon afterwards, Garth and Bess disappear and Sam is kidnapped.

The pack leader's wife, Joy and two other werewolves, Russ and Jobah reveal themselves to be plotting to bring about Ragnarok and rule over mankind and are going to murder Garth and Bess and frame Sam and Dean to galvanize the pack into joining them instead of their peace-loving ways. Garth pleads unsuccessfully for Bess' life, but Dean figures out the truth and comes to their rescue, killing the three rogue werewolves. In the aftermath, Garth offers to become a hunter again, using his werewolf powers to help, but Dean recognizes that the entire pack wasn't bad and that Garth has found happiness and tells him to stay with Bess and the werewolves. Garth also feels responsible for Kevin's death as he wasn't there, but Dean assures him it wasn't his fault and, much to Garth's pleased surprise, invites Garth to hug him before he changes his mind. The two friends embraced and part on good terms.

Season 12[]

In Celebrating The Life Of Asa Fox, Garth is mentioned to have passed on information about Sam's possession by Lucifer to other hunters. While a few hunters feel they should keep it to themselves and not discomfort Sam, others find the story interesting and wish to prod Sam about it.

In Ladies Drink Free, after Mick Davies reveals that the British Men of Letters have killed all of the werewolves in England, bitten and pureblood alike, Sam tells him about how Garth was bitten and can control himself. However, Mick is skeptical of this.

In Twigs & Twine & Tasha Banes, it is shown that the British Men of Letters have been keeping tabs on Garth. They are aware of his status as a werewolf and intend to treat him as such.

In Who We Are, Dean contacts Garth and warns him about the threat from the British Men of Letters. Knowing that Garth would be a prime target as a werewolf, Dean orders him and Bess to hide.

Season 14[]

In Nightmare Logic, Dean calls Garth to warn him of Michael's enhanced monsters and traps for hunters.

The Spear 08

Unhinged by the grace, Garth is restrained by Sam.

During The Spear, Garth is revealed to have been called out of retirement by Sam to obtain intel on Michael's army. Garth goes to the building of Michael's army, where the latter takes note of him and points him out as Dean's friend after remembering his face from possessing Dean. Michael is not sure of Garth's trustworthiness but stops after the latter assures him. Afterwards, Garth and fellow recruit were given grace by Melanie to improve themselves, though hesitant he took it and became enhanced. Garth later informed Sam of Michael going after Alternate Kaia and her spear. He soon hangs up as Michael tells him they need to talk, to his worry. He is shown to be alright as he meets up with Sam and Jack in the basement, though he starts to act erratic and reveals he was enhanced by grace. This causes him to enter a berserk state and attack Jack, who is scarred but Sam restrains Garth and strangles him until he loses conscious. With Garth in no condition to carry on, Team Free Will ties him up and puts him in the trunk of the Impala until they could find a way to help him. Afterwards, Sam suggests that when Garth took on the grace, it gave Michael a doorway into his mind, allowing Michael to spy on their plans through Garth and take control of him.

In Nihilism, after Sam suggests locking the captured Michael in the Impala's trunk, he is reminded that Garth is still locked up in there. Sam simply comments that its a big trunk and they can both fit. Later, while on the phone with Maggie, Sam asks her to retrieve the Impala and Garth, but the threat from Michael's monsters cancels that plan.

Season 15[]

In The Heroes' Journey, Garth calls Dean for help after Bess' cousin Brad is found badly injured by a Wraith. When the Winchesters arrive, Garth notices Dean's issues with his teeth and offers his help, explaining that he had returned to dental school and became a dentist, opening his own practice. Garth discovers Dean has seventeen cavities and fixes them for him and listens as Sam and Dean explain their conflict with God. Though Garth knows he is likely only a special guest star in God's story, he is content with that as being the hero is tough. Garth theorizes that God had made the Winchesters immune to regular people problems so as not to slow down the story, but since they have fallen out of favor, downgraded Sam and Dean to normal people. After Brad reveals the location of the monster fight club, Sam and Dean refuse Garth's offer of help so as not to disrupt his normal life, though Garth provides them a new set of spark plugs for the Impala.

After the Winchesters are captured to be pitted against the massive vampire Maul, Garth shows up to rescue them, explaining that he got worried when they didn't answer his phone calls. As they escape, Garth reveals that he planted C4 all over the place and blows up the fight club and all of the monsters inside. However, Maul survives and knocks Garth out when he tries to fight the vampire. As Maul prepares to kill the Winchesters, a recovered Garth chops Maul's head in half with a machete, commenting that Maul had been "Garth'd."

In the aftermath, Sam and Dean suggest that Garth was the true hero of the story this time for saving them and destroying the fight club. Garth suggests a place he has heard of in Alaska where they could potentially regain their luck, but warns that something like that always comes with consequences. As Sam and Dean leave, Garth dances with Bess to "Werewolves of London."

In The Gamblers, the Winchesters search for the place Garth mentioned which is not even in the lore and only Garth has ever heard of it.

In Despair, Donna Hanscum tells Sam that she called Garth and told him to keep any eye out, however God intervenes and kills all life on Earth, including Garth.

In Inherit the Earth, the Winchesters attempt to contact Garth with no success. However, Jack later restores everyone killed by God, bringing Garth back to life.

Garth also appears in the flashback sequence at the end.

Powers and Abilities[]

Human:

  • Moderate Hunting Skills - As a hunter, Garth had a moderate level of skill, good enough to hunt ghosts and monsters. He also managed to prepare the right material for a devil's trap to keep Guy in place, claiming that his bottle of blueberry vodka came in handy. Garth even took over as "the new Bobby", but not without often getting injured in the process.

Werewolf - Garth has all the powers of a werewolf. He later gained the powers of a grace-enhanced werewolf while working undercover in Michael's army:

  • Shapeshifting - As a werewolf, Garth has the ability to shift between human and wolf form. As a pureblood, he could do this at any time.
  • Infectious bite - Garth possesses the ability to turn others into werewolves through his bite.
  • Claws and Fangs - Werewolves have powerful claws and are able to cut through solid walls. Their fangs can tear human flesh and can rip out a human heart right out of their chest cavity. Pureblood werewolves are able to transform just their claws without transforming fully.
  • Super Strength - As a werewolf, Garth possesses enhanced strength, greater than that of a normal human; this strength was even further enhanced by the archangel Michael's grace. Garth’s strength also allowed him to slice half-way down a particularly robust Vampire’s skull.
  • Super Agility - As a Werewolf, Garth possesses enhanced agility that is superior to any human; he is able to easily and rapidly run, jump, sprint and climb, can perform very high jumps, and leap across great distances. Garth was also able to escape from Sam and Dean by fitting through a small window in a hospital bathroom, just moments after waking up from a car accident.
  • Super Speed - Werewolves are capable of moving inhumanly fast, allowing them to cover short distances in the blink of an eye. Garth was quick and agile enough to avoid the gunfire from a farmer’s rifle.
  • Super Stamina - Werewolves do not tire easily, allowing them to easily exert themselves in a superhuman capacity.
  • Super Senses - All werewolves are able to see better than humans in darkness, similar to actual wolves, and their senses of smell and hearing are equally enhanced. By concentrating, Garth was able to clearly hear a conversation between Michael and Melanie from across a room.
  • Invulnerability - As a Werewolf, Garth cannot be killed by most conventional means and weapons; this allowed him to survive being run over by a car. Whilst silver can kill a normal werewolf, Garth is no longer susceptible to this weakness since becoming grace enhanced, however he can still be killed by decapitation.
  • Regeneration - Werewolves can regenerate all non-lethal damage, purebloods are even able to completely heal their original bites. Over the course of a day, Garth's facial injuries from being hit by a car had visibly healed.
  • Immunity - After becoming grace-enhanced, Garth gained further enhanced werewolf abilities, as well as being granted an immunity to silver.

Weaknesses[]

  • Mortality (formerly) - As a human, Garth was vulnerable to injury and death.
  • Silver (formerly) - As a werewolf, Garth could be harmed and killed by silver. He lost this weakness after becoming enhanced by Michael's grace.
  • Archangels - Beings like Alternate Michael could easily kill Garth. After ingesting Michael's grace, Michael was able to control Garth and make him attack his friends.
  • Decapitation - Like all grace-enhanced werewolves, Garth could only be killed through decapitation.

Personality[]

Garth is a hunter who generally works alone, although he has teamed up with the Winchesters on three separate occasions and once with Bobby, on a Rugaru hunt (he almost got killed because he isn't that great of a hunter). Garth drives a Ford Ranchero with shovels in the back, in case he needs to dig up a grave on a hunt. Once he puts a spirit to rest, he says that the spirit has been "Garthed." When he drives, he sometimes plays the song Poison by Bell Biv DeVoe.

After stepping up to fill Bobby's role, Garth becomes more serious and confident, as well as more capable at his job. He also adopts several of Bobby's mannerisms. He's described by Dean as someone who "grows on you."

Garth likes sweet things and comics, gets drunk easily, and appreciates a hot bath after a hard day's hunting. He likes giving hugs. Some time after Sam and Dean first meet him, Garth began a relationship with a "special lady" who knows about his hunting.

When he became a werewolf, he hid his condition from his friends out of fear. He was planning to kill himself but was stopped by Bess Fitzgerald who gave him a new purpose and he regained his old self and found someone who understood him.

After officially retiring from hunting, Garth managed to control his instinct to feed by preying on livestock and showed he was still himself. With Bess, Garth became a family man with a little girl and twins all of whom he cherishes.

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • Garth has been shown to have a very low tolerance for alcohol, becoming intoxicated after drinking a single beer.
  • Garth once disguised himself as a member of the US Marines to gain access to a morgue in order to find out information on a case and on another occasion a Texas Ranger despite being in Missouri. He explained this as wearing a suit makes him look like a funeral director.
  • Before becoming a hunter, he went to college and dental college and worked as a dentist for a while.[1] Eight years later, when Garth retired from the hunting life, he finally became a dentist and opened his own practice.[2]
  • Garth's first kill was the Tooth Fairy.
  • Garth is evidently completely immune to Specters. As demonstrated in Southern Comfort, Garth simply says this is because he "doesn't hold grudges."
  • Garth was initially supposed to be one of the hunters killed off-screen during the Leviathan outbreak. He was saved and included into the show by then showrunner, Sera Gamble.[3]
  • Garth is the third hunter shown to be turned into a monster: Gordon Walker was turned into a vampire as was Dean briefly before being cured. Garth has been turned into a werewolf, but poses no danger, so Sam and Dean leave him alone.
  • Garth is able to play the piano very well.
  • Garth is described as a "hugger" by Dean since he enjoys giving hugs.
  • Garth appears in the novel Supernatural: Children of Anubis which takes place after Season 12's The One You've Been Waiting For and is dedicated to DJ Qualls, Garth's actor.
  • In Supernatural: Children of Anubis, Garth's Ford Ranchero is stated to have a personalized license plate reading WULF and is called Garth's Wulfmobile as it drives away at the end of the story.
  • Garth is one of Sam and Dean's few living friends other than Jody Mills.
  • Dean believed that if they killed Michael, Garth would no longer be a grace-enhanced werewolf. While, since Michael is now dead, Garth can no longer be controlled by him, his enhanced status is apparently intact, as he has displayed no fear of silver.
  • Despite having no on-screen interaction with him, Garth named one of his sons after Castiel.
