Ephraim was an angel hailing from a special class, Rit Zien. He fell to the Earth from Heaven due to the spell cast by Metatron. Upon arrival, he took the vessel of a man who had recently become very religious. While on earth, he continued his work as a medical angel--healing the sick and, more importantly, bringing swift and virtually painless death to the gravely injured or emotionally despondent by smiting them. His first victim was his vessel's wife. He came across Castiel, who Ephraim wanted to help by ending his pain once and for all. With the help of Dean, Castiel killed him with an Angel Blade when he tried.

Biography

Early Life

Ephraim met Castiel several years ago. He envied Castiel's fame and power, and admitted he knew Castiel failed more often than he succeeded but he always went big. He also never came to Earth before the Fall and had never had a vessel before.

Season 9

After falling to Earth, Ephraim gains a vessel in the form of a man who had recently became deeply religious and a follower of the Reverend Buddy Boyle. Not understanding the difference between emotional and physical pain due to his lack of interaction with humanity, Ephraim began a crusade to rid the world of pain by smiting those who were in pain. His vessel's wife was his first victim and he killed four more people, drawing the attention of Castiel and Dean Winchester. While most of these people were suicidal or in bad emotional states, Ephraim killed a girl who was just upset over a bad break-up with her boyfriend. Ephraim eventually tracked Castiel's pain over being human to a house where he was babysitting and confronted him. Castiel thought he was there his manager Nora's baby, Tanya, as she was sick and crying, but Ephraim wasn't: Castiel was in more pain over being human and Ephraim could sense it from miles away. Castiel attempted to banish Ephraim but failed. Ephraim confronted Castiel over how he should be trying to help the angels get back into Heaven and prepared to smite him as he felt that by being human, Castiel had already given up. Dean, who had figured out what Ephraim was up to, arrived and tried to stop him, but failed and Ephraim started to smite Castiel. However, Dean slid Castiel an angel blade as Ephraim was smiting him and Castiel killed the misguided angel with it. The encounter left Castiel disturbed as he realized Ephraim was right about how Castiel should be helping the angels.
