Devil's trap bullets are a bullet version of a devil's trap first invented by Henry Winchester.
History
In As Time Goes By, after the Knight of Hell Abaddon kidnapped his brother, hunter Dean Winchester asked his grandfather, Man of Letters Henry Winchester if he could slow Abaddon down. In response, Henry carved a devil's trap into a bullet, making the first ever devil's trap bullet. During the confrontation that followed, Henry shot Abaddon through the chin and into her head with the bullet, trapping her in her vessel of Josie Sands and binding Abaddon's powers. Unable to kill Abaddon, Dean cut off her head and told Abaddon that with the bullet binding her to her vessel, the Winchesters would cut Abaddon into pieces and bury the pieces in cement, forever trapping her.
In Clip Show, the Winchesters put Abaddon's cut-up body back together, but leave her hands cut off. The bullet also continues to bind her in the same manner as a devil's trap. However, while the Winchesters are distracted by a phone call from Crowley, Abaddon is able to control one of her cut off hands to crawl into her mouth and remove the bullet from her head. With the bullet gone, Abaddon is immediately set free and regaining her powers, disappears. Upon their return, all the Winchesters find is the discarded devil's trap bullet on the ground.
In Devil May Care, when facing Abaddon in Eugene, Oregon, one of the weapons Dean has the group arm up with is devil's trap bullets. During the fight, hunter Tracy Bell shoots Abaddon several times in the chest with the bullets. However, Abaddon is wearing a Kevlar vest and the bullets have no effect upon her.
In King of the Damned, after luring the Winchesters into a trap with Crowley's help, Abaddon suddenly shoots him in the shoulder with a small revolver. Abaddon then reveals that she shot Crowley with a devil's trap bullet, crediting Henry for the idea, in order to keep Crowley out of the coming fight. After Dean kills Abaddon with the First Blade, Crowley uses a knife to remove the bullet from his shoulder, complaining that the Winchesters aren't helping him. Sam notes that they could've just as easily killed Crowley instead of letting him remove the bullet and leave.
In The Prisoner, Rowena MacLeod demands that Sam kill Crowley in exchange for her removing the Mark of Cain from Dean's arm. In order to facilitate this, Sam lures Crowley to a warehouse and shoots him with a devil's trap bullet to incapacitate him. As per Rowena's demands, Sam attempts to kill Crowley with the Defigere Et Depurgare spell while the bullet keeps him incapacitated. However, Crowley is able to resist the spell, dig out the bullet with his bare fingers while hunched over and stop the assassination attempt.
In Stuck in the Middle (With You), Mary Winchester takes her sons and Wally on a hunt for a demon that is supposedly slaughtering virgins nearby. One of the weapons the hunters arm themselves with is devil's trap bullets as part of their plan to trap the demon so that they can kill him. When the demon arrives, Dean shoots him with a devil's trap bullet to absolutely no effect. Even when Dean shoots the demon four more times with the bullets, he is completely unaffected. The demon is eventually revealed to be one of the Princes of Hell Ramiel whose power and status render him immune to the bullet's powers.
In Twigs & Twine & Tasha Banes, Dean gives the good witch Max Banes a tour of The Impala's arsenal. After the two commentate over Dean's grenade launcher, Dean shows him a box of bullets which contain the witch-killing bullets, the weapon they actually need. Silver bullets and devil's trap bullets are also seen in the box.
In Stranger in a Strange Land, devil's trap bullets are one of several different kinds of bullets shown to Mary Winchester as having been created for use by Sam's new hunter network. Sam later orders his team to arm themselves with devil's trap bullets while going after Kipling. In the battle that follows, Bobby manages to take down one of Kipling's Henchmen with devil's trap bullets from Rufus, but the remaining demons dodge his and Mary's fire and disarm them before they can shoot anymore demons. The devil's trap bullets keep the demon Bobby shot out of the fight and he is presumably killed by the hunters after its over.
