"You know, I never understood you pagans, always fighting, always happy to sell out your own kind. No wonder you forfeited this planet to us. You, are worse than humans. You're worse than demons. And yet you claim to be Gods." - Lucifer to Mercury

Deities or Gods are a race of immortal beings, each is a prime authority, in the religion which they set up. Despite having a role in human religion, and having free will, (at least) the majority of them have mostly shown concerned for themselves and their survival. Some of them are neutral, while some may be considered evil. Many are known to have a taste for human flesh.

History

At certain points in time, various Pagan Deities formed their own collective pantheons and religions, which attracted many followers across the world. These Deities were worshiped for centuries, and in some cases, millenia. However the majority of them lost at least a significant proportion of their followers when the abrahamic faiths arrived. Thus the Deities were left without sacrifices, significantly weakening some of them. In the modern era, many are scattered across the world, either holding minor cults, or simply taking sacrifices, by killing others.

According to Kali, there are billions of gods (or possibly pagan religions) on Earth. Also, according to Kali, many of their religions were practiced long before that of God.

Charateristics

As Pagan Gods, they are powerful beings. However, there are numerous differences among them, from their age to their abilities. They may also hold differing stances on certain events or against other beliefs and religions. Many see themselves as all-powerful. The majority of them also look down on humans, seeing them as only food, or sacrifices. Some even openly attack humans simply for there own amusements and have shown sadistic pleasure in harming, torturing and killing humans.

They also don't hold much loyalty to each other (except for perhaps other deities from the same religions), and seem to have as much hostility with each other, as they do with humans. Normally a Deity's main interest is looking after themselves, while some have been known to betray their masters, simply as soon as they receive a better offer. Lucifer openly shows disgust for Mercury and the other Gods for their lack of loyalty to one another and their pride, calling them petty, and worse than humans or demons - he kills Mercury and several other Gods. Likewise, Baldur congratulates so many deities for putting aside their differences when they meet to discuss the Apocalypse.

Another important thing for deities are rituals and many follow pre-set rituals. Many continue performing such rituals for the remainder of their existence, regardless of their number of followers.

Known Pagan Gods

Powers & Abilities

As Pagan Deities, they are quite powerful beings, some being powerful enough to be classified as higher beings. Unlike demons, angels, and all other supernatural species for that matter, the powers of the Deities vary between each other. Normally, it depends on each type of god. They also gain power through human "Sacrifices".

While each god has unique powers, they do share certain powers (as such the section). It is certain that they (or at least most of them) are more powerful than monsters, spirits and demons. Some gods even possess powers beyond angels. (Due to their variation, its split into standard powers which they all have, similar powers, which some have, and unique powers)

Standard powers

  • Immortality - As Pagan Deities, they can live forever for they are immune to aging. Many have been around for centuries and even millenia. Most Deities have even been stated to have appeared not long after God and Death.
  • Invulnerability - They are unharmed by conventional weaponry, and are immune to pain, and common physical ailments and disease. They can however be harmed and killed by stronger beings, including other stronger Deities. Weapons belonging to other pagan Gods also seem to be effective to some extent.
  • Super strength - Exceedingly strong, with even the weakest Deities being able to casually overpower, and lift men.
  • Super stamina - Deities never tire regardless of what they go through.
  • Magic - Many Deities possess incredible magical powers with some being truly divine. A deity's powers depends on the type of deity it is.

Similar Powers

  • Super speed - Some gods, such as Leshi, Osiris and most notably Mercury, can move at incredible speeds.
  • Telekinesis - The ability to move objects with their mind. Many gods possess this power, such as Kali, Osiris, Leshi, Beau and Veritas.
  • Telepathy - Many deties possess the power to read the thoughts of other beings. Leshi and Osiris used this to learn from their victims, while Eve had the ability to communicate with all her children (Monsters) on earth, as well as see and hear what they experienced.
  • Super senses - Some gods, such as Leshi and Osiris possess superhuman senses.
  • Teleportation - Some of the older and more powerful gods have this power. Kali, Osiris, Atropos, Plutus and Chronos have all displayed this. Beau also possesed this power and also demonstated the ability to teleport others with a gesture.
  • Biokinesis - The ability to control a person's body, either through harm or transfiguration. Kali has shown this power against another god, Mercury. Eve has shown this ability many times when she was turning people into monsters, or even more powerful hybrids.
  • Time Manipulation - The power to manipulate time. Atropos is able to stop time and selectively manipulate its flow. Along with her prediction of events, she uses this to assist her in manipulating events to bring about people's deaths and fates. Chronos was able to travel through time, and bring others with him. He could also manipulate the flow of time. Tricksters have the power to create time loops (where the victim will keep repeating events over and over again). This will last until the one responsible is killed or lets them out, otherwise the time loop will not stop.
  • Spellcasting - Several deities have shown the attribute for casting spells and performing rituals. Madge and Edward Carrigan performed rituals for their tributes. Kali's blood magic was called a blood spell by Gabriel, and Plutus had cast warding spells on his location to prevent even powerful beings like the King of Hell and Angels from directly harming him.
  • Supreme Knowledge - Many gods, such as Atropos, Odin, Baldur, Kali, Ganesh, Chronos, Baron Samedi and Mercury, possess incredible knowledge, of events and people that many other beings do not know about.
  • Shapeshifting - Veritas has this power to a limited degree. Tricksters, Leshi, Ganesh and Eve have this power.
  • Conjuration - The power to create or to uncreate something or someone from nothing. Tricksters are known to have this ability.
  • Reality Warping - The power to change the laws of reality and to create new laws or realities entirely. Tricksters have this power. Mercury also has this ability as shown with the rebuilding, reshaping and reconstruction of the Elysian Field Motel, transforming it from an old, rotten, broken down building into a luxurios resort.
  • Influence over Vegetation - To have some influence over plants and vegetation such as returning life to dead plants. Mercury has this ability or at least his presence induces the same affect. The Vanir were able to make Harvests more bountiful.
  • Weather Manipulation - Some of the gods could control the weather, such as preventing a harsh winter, or by providing a climate well-suited for planting and harvesting. Madge and Edward Carrigan have this ability. The Vanir has displayed this ability, and was shown to unleash heavy rain when angered.

Unique Powers

  • Supernatural perception -The ability to see and hear things and beings that are invisible. Atropos could tell who Castiel was while he was inside his vessel, Jimmy. Those with this power are obviously unharmed by looking upon the true form of higher beings.
  • Ability to Force People to Speak the Truth - The ability to compel humans to speak the truth. So far, only Veritas has displayed this power. She can also curse people so they are only told the truth (by other humans).
  • Pyrokinesis- The ability to manipulate and generate fire by thought. Kali has this power.
  • Control over Spirits - The power to have control over spirits/souls. Osiris is able to control the spirits of the dead, turning them into Vengeful Spirits.
  • Angelic Suppression - The ability to temporarily block the powers of an angelic being. Eve has shown this ability against Castiel. Eve stated that she was older than angels (unknown if she was also older than archangels) and that she knew what makes them tick.
  • Foresight - As the God of Time, Chronos could see the future.
  • Granting Immortality - The Mayan God Cacao could grant others immortality (as well as heightened abilities) in exchange for regular sacrifices.

Vulnerabilities

Though powerful beings, gods can be killed normally by specific rituals (Leshy, Veritas, Osiris, Vanir), many gods on are vulnerable to certain types wooden stakes, normally dipped in certain types of blood (Chronos, Zao Shen, Plutus, Hold Nickar). Usually the stakes were from trees common to the home country or nation of the god. Another way to kill a god is with a powerful weaponry, such as that made by other gods. Beau and Villi were both easily killed with Thor's Hammer by Sam, Atropos could be killed by a knife in Heavens possession.

Types of God

As well as standard gods, there are also subspecies of gods, gods who fall into a certain category, even if they do not belong to the same religion.

  • Tricksters - A special type of god and quite powerful, these beings are common in many cultures and thrive on creating mischief and mayhem. They have the power to make objects materialize out of thin air and remove them just as quickly. Tricksters accomplishes their destructive or harming feats with unusual and often humorous means, its intent to humble the self-important. The Trickster's commonly have a sweet tooth. To kill a Trickster one must obtain a stake dipped in the blood of its victim and plunge it into the creature's heart. Famous Tricksters include Loki of Scandinavian myth and Anansi of West Africa.
  • Vanir - Gods of Norse belief, gods of Fertility and success, they offer these boons to the lands or people in exchange for sacrifices.
  • Hold Nickar - Pagan gods of the Winter Solstice, who grant mild weather in exchange for sacrifices. Madge and Edward Carrigan, were Hold Nickar.

God

God is also a deity, for which he is the central icon of the Abrahamic religions, ( Judaism, Christianity, Islam). He is however not of the same species as pagan gods and is seen as having more power than the other Deities. The only characteristic that he shares is immortality. However Death states that just like everything else, God will also die one day and that he will be the one to reap him.

Trivia

  • Confirmed in the last Salute to Supernatural for Season 6. Deities are one of few supernatural species that don't go to Purgatory if they are killed.
  • Despite being an archangel, Lucifer is called a god by some demons for being their creator. Ironically, he despises them just as much as humans.
  • While some gods fought lucifer an archangel and lost, it has yet to show the difference in power between Gods and the other numerous beings in the Supernatural series. However it has been confirmed that standard Deities are stronger than humans, monsters(unknown if this includes the Leviathans), and demons.
  • In Supernatural, it has been confirmed that the Deities powers do not come just from worship. What separates the strength of individual deities is unknown. However Sam states "The old gods got a lot of their mojo from worshipers, from people feeding them". However, Gods like Osiris don't seem to take sacrifices and can go hundreds of years without needing any. Chronos also states that he (not all gods) need three sacrifices to control when and where he lands in time. It's shown that he can take sacrifices from any human, not just ones that worshipped him, in order control his wandering of the timelines.
  • Many Deities choose to feed on human flesh as food. However some Gods such as Osiris, Chronos, and Atropos don't seem to.
  • Deities have appeared in all seasons except for season 2 and 4.
  • In the Supernatural Novel 'Coyote's Kiss' Castiel says that the angels made a deal with pagan deities to stay out of the deities business if they did not intervene in the apocalypse. This is directly contradicted in the Season 5 episode Hammer of the Gods.
  • A interesting note is that some of the deities are employed into God's plans. Atropos and her sisters the Fates were give their positions by God. This is an interesting note as the Fates are deities from Greek Mythology.
