“ | It's a Blood Sigil. Blood leads to blood. Or their next of kin. | ” |
The Blood Sigil is a powerful spell that allows a user to be sent to their kin, regardless of differences in both time and space. This was used by Henry Winchester to both locate his son John and escape the Knight of Hell named Abaddon. However, he was inadvertently sent to Sam and Dean Winchester due to John's deceased state.
This was a powerful spell that tapped on the power of the user's soul. According to Henry, knowledge of this spell is expected from high-level Men of Letters.
Overview[]
In 1958, when fleeing from Abaddon, Henry Winchester used this spell to try to reach his son John in the future but as he was dead by 2013, ended up with his grandsons Sam and Dean Winchester instead. Abaddon somehow managed to follow Henry through time with the same spell.
In 2014, in order to blackmail Crowley into helping her kill the Winchesters, Abaddon used the Blood Sigil to travel back to 1723 Scotland to kidnap Gavin MacLeod, Crowley's son. She was then able to use the sigil to return to 2014 with Gavin. In this instance, Abaddon used a bottle of what was presumably Crowley's blood to create the sigil.
In 2017, Sam Winchester used a Blood Sigil that had been "tweaked" by Rowena MacLeod to return Gavin to his own time.
Procedure[]
The spell is rather difficult as it required the power of the user's soul. However, as demons are able to use the spell without having souls nor time to recharge, more powerful beings also appear to be able to use the spell to travel through time on their sheer power alone. Additionally, the other ingredients are very rare and belong to powerful creatures.
Ingredients[]
The spell required the blood of the caster, an angel feather, tears of a dragon, and a pinch of the Sands of Time. The blood is used to draw a sigil on any flat surface.
Incantation[]
Like most spells, the Blood Sigil has an incantation. This incantation is in Enochian. It is as follows:
Kah-nee-lah Poo-goh!
Rough translation:
Blood unto (blood)!
The user must recite this several times until the sigil glows and the spell is activated.
Variation[]
Overview[]
In 2017, a variation was used by the Winchesters to return Gavin MacLeod to his own time. According to Sam Winchester, Rowena MacLeod tweaked the spell so that it would work for Gavin, presumably as he was going back to a time when he had no blood relatives for the spell to lock onto.
Procedure[]
The procedure for the variation of the spell worked generally the same as the original spell. The only difference was that a second person would cast the incantation:
Kah-nee-lah Poo-goh Kah-nee-lah!
Rough translation:
Blood unto blood!
Once the incantation was recited, a light would shine from the Blood Sigil and surround the traveler before causing them to fade away. They would then be immediately returned to their own time.

Trivia[]
- The spell could either be performed or the effect replicated by powerful demons, as Abaddon was able to follow Henry, despite her not being related to Sam and Dean. However, she mentioned that Henry "forgot to close the door," implying she might just used his Blood Sigil that he left behind.
- It's been shown that the spell can be used to travel both ways in time, depending on where the relative the user wants to find is located.
- In Season 12's Family Feud, Sam is shown to have read the spell in a book from the Men of Letters bunker when returning Gavin MacLeod to his own time. Though Rowena MacLeod is stated to have modified the spell slightly, the changes appear to have been in the form of instructions to Sam, as she does not participate, nor does the procedure change much at all.
- The Blood Sigil is very similar to Enochian Magic:
- Both involve speaking in the Enochian language.
- Both use the power of the caster's soul.
